Sporting Chance

Sporting Chance is a programme that provides financial assistance to children from disadvantaged circumstances to help them take part in sport. It funds participation and will assist with the basic costs of playing a sport. Sporting Chance makes grants for the costs of:

  • Fees. You can apply for the cost of club or schools fees for playing sport. There are some exceptions - see below - so be sure to apply for the right costs to increase your chances of getting a grant.

  • Sporting footwear. You can apply for the cost of sporting footwear such as football boots, court shoes or running shoes.

To be eligible for a grant, a student must be:

  • Regularly attending school in Otago, and be between Years 1 and 13.

  • Participating in an ongoing sporting commitment, which could be a season or a year depending on the sport.

  • Have genuine financial need as determined by the referring body.

How to Apply to Sporting Chance

All applications to Sporting Chance must be made through a Sporting Chance referee on an official application form. Application forms are available from schools and support agencies throughout Otago. All applications must be signed by the applicant's parent or guardian and a Sporting Chance referee. A letter will then be sent to the relevant Sporting Chance referee notifying them of the outcome.

Mountain Biking

Entries are now open for the Otago / Southland School MTB champs 2021.

The event will be held on Saturday and Sunday 20 - 21 February at Signal Hill in Dunedin.

Athletics

The NZSS Athletics & Road Race Championships will be held from 11 -13 December in Tauranga. Entries close on Friday 20 November. Please come to the sports hub to sign up.


SPORT RESULTS

Central Otago Junior Touch Rugby

The Central Otago Junior Touch Rugby Tournament was held on 3 November in Cromwell, with six schools competing making up a total of eightteams. MAC had one team comprising 14 Year 9/10 students. The team played extremely well earning themselves fourth place. A big thank you to Lana Whipp for coaching the team and well done team!

Balclutha Half Marathon

The Balclutha Half Marathon was held on 1 November. There were also 10km and 5km fun runs.  MAC students Olivia (Year 11) and Liam (Year 7) McLachlan took part in the 5km with Olivia placing first in the U18 female, (and third overall) and Liam placing second in the U18 male, (and fourth overall). Well done to both Olivia and Liam!

Southern United Selection

Well done to MAC student Saffron Millar for being selected for the Southern United U14 Academy and Southern United Women’s National Development Squad!
