ROWING

Rocket Foods NZ Rowing Championships 2021

Despite the uncertainty of the NZ Rowing Champs regatta going ahead Wanaka Rowing Club managed to achieve some top-notch results in Twizel.

To open up the medal run was Pipi Horan in the women’s intermediate single sculls looking in exceptional form after winning her heat and semi-final putting her into the A-final. Pipi managed to pick up a silver medal after an immaculate 100m sprint to put herself one second ahead of third place.

The women’s intermediate double sculls event saw two competitive Wanaka crews race. Neve Faed and Bella Sarginson placed in their heat sending them through to the semi-final where they just missed out on an A-final, however they managed to nudge themselves into 2nd place in the B-final in an extremely tough race. The iconic double of Pipi Horan and Emily Findlay flew their way through their heat and semi-final placing a very convincing first both times putting them in lead position heading into the A-final. In the A-final they showed off their dominance bringing home the gold medal and leaving a substantial gap of 6 seconds between themselves and second place.

Both the women’s intermediate double sculls crews combined to make a quad with Thomas Mitchell commanding exceptionally well from the coxswain seat. The crew raced in the women’s intermediate coxed quad sculls, where they completely blitzed their opposition in the heat meaning that they skipped the repechages and went straight through to the A-final. In the A-final they commanded the race from start to finish earning the gold medal by10 seconds! Leaving Emily Findlay with 2 golds out of her 2 races and commenting “a clean sweep" as Abby Lee Miller would say.

Aaron Maxwell was given the opportunity to compete in a composite crew with the Gisborne Rowing Club men's club coxed eight that was a straight A-final where they had a strong outing placing third, winning a bronze medal. Aaron also competed in the mens club single sculls where he placed second in his heat but missed out on the A-final after placing seventh in his semi-final. Aaron Maxwell then competed in the mens intermediate single sculls where he won his heat by a fair margin placing himself in the semi-final up against the North Island intermediate single sculls champion, placing second in the semi-final, qualifying for the A-final. In the A-final the competition was strong but Aaron battled and came away with a bronze medal.

All in all Wanaka had a phenomenal regatta with an impressive medal haul for such a minimal amount of rowers taken, bringing home 2 golds, 1 silver and 2 bronzes.

TENNIS

Last week six Mount Aspiring College students competed in the Otago Secondary Schools teams tennis tournament in Dunedin.  Seven teams were entered in the Cup (B) grade at the tournament.

Lochie Hunt and Kalan Nichol took out first place, Nat Warburton and Georgia Lindsay placed second and Finn Thomsson and Sam Hunger placed third.  Congratulations to all!

VOLLEYBALL

Our senior girl's volleyball team travelled to Dunedin last Saturday morning at an early 5.30am to play in the Otago Secondary Schools Senior Seeding Volleyball tournament. Our first game was at 10.00am and we were all very excited and nervous for our first tournament of the ones to come. This tournament was really a warm-up for us girls and a way for us to get used to playing with some of the new girls on our team. We played six games and ended up in fifth place overall. Losing to Columba and Bayfield, and beating Columba B twice, Kavanagh and OGHS B’s.  As the tournament went on our team got better and better so I know we are all feeling very excited and ready for the next two tournaments we have coming up in the next two weekends.

CRICKET

This past week has been a busy one for cricket here at Mount Aspiring College. On Friday 19 February our 1st XI team competed in the first round of the T20 National Schools competition, winning their first game but just missing out in their second.

On Wednesday 24 February the Year 7/8 boys team played in the first round of the National Primary School's Cup winning their game which moved them onto the next round. Well done!

On Thursday 25 February the Year 7/8 girls team played in the first round of the National Primary School's Shield in Queenstown. They had a loss and one win. Great result for a team of young female cricketers who have never played together before. Watch this space!

Well done everyone and a big thank you to all coaches and managers.
