VOLLEYBALL

Congratulation to our MAC volleyball team!

The MAC senior girls volleyball team travelled to Christchurch last Thursday to play in the Mainland Senior Volleyball Championships.

This tournament had 28 boys' teams over two divisions and 42 girls' teams over three divisions. After travelling to Dunedin the week before and placing fifth, we were placed in Division 3. On Friday, we were in pool play vying for a top eight spot. Needing to win a minimum of three of our four games, we went better than that and won all four of our games, only dropping the one set all day.

This put us to the top of our pool. Our first game on Saturday was against Wakatipu A. We started slow, dropping the first two sets, coming back to win the third set convincingly. Unfortunately the very close fourth set did not finish in our favour. Needing to win the last two games to make it to the semis, I am proud to say that we bet Columba B and Central Southland A in straight sets.

At the end of day two, we were beginning to tire. Games ran several hours late and we were a player down. Unfortunately one of our strong defenders, Olivia Jones, went up to block a spike from the opposing team in our last game on Saturday night, coming down and landing on the opposition's foot, rolling her ankle and putting her out for the rest of the tournament. We are hoping to have her back for OSS this weekend.

Sunday, day three, we watched from afar, (Covid restrictions), Wakatipu A win their semi final 3-2. Our opposition Middleton Grange A were a tough and well practiced opposition. This was a testing game with all sets being close. Having confidence in ourselves, we were pleased to come away with a 3-1 win. Final’s spot, here we come. And who would we meet – Wakatipu A.

Going in as the underdogs, only meant we were hungry for the win. After a long weekend, I am proud of our team. We kept going and kept trying, taking a 3-0 win. A successful tournament for us. Overall, we won 21 sets to 5 sets lost for the weekend.

Division 3 Winners.

A huge thank you to our coach Jason Dickson and our manager Georgie Roberts. Thank you for all of your time and support. We would also like to thank Jo and Scott Jones for their time and assistance with our team.

TENNIS

Seven Mount Aspiring College students went to Timaru last weekend to play in the South Island Secondary Schools Tennis Champs.

Lochie Hunt and Ben Davies (combined with two Burnside High players), Georgia Lindsay (teamed up with Phoebe O’Donnell from Columba College), Sam Beale, Finn Thomsson, Zavier Taylor and Daniel Wright faced some tough opposition from other regions!

The students played well, despite more losses than wins, and Lochie, Ben and their teammates from Burnside High won their second round to go into the Plate Final.

Unfortunately Sunday morning was raining and after several delays the organisers called the rest of the tournament off.

The highlight of the trip was the stop in Omarama after the sun came out again and playing tennis with each other for three hours!
