MAC ATHLETICS FRIDAY 21ST FEBRUARY

We need your help! The PE department requires parent timers for track events. Athletics Day runs from 8.35am - 3.15pm. If you are available to help in the morning or afternoon then please get in contact with Nicole McCone mcconen@mtaspiring.school.nz

Athletics Day Information

When: Friday 21 February (Week 4)

Athletics Timetable 2020 available here (also available in the newsletter and on the whanau calendar)

  • Athletics Day is a non-compulsory one-day event including finals. Students must complete the Google Form sent to their Student Email in whanau of Week 3.

  • Cancellation will be announced on the school Facebook page, school website and Radio Wanaka.

  • Participants meet in their whanau classroom before 8.30am for the roll and go straight to their first event.

  • Non-participants will also go to whanau and be sent to the appropriate classroom.

  • Students are grouped by their age and travel around the athletics disciplines according to the timetable. The age group categories are: Year 7, Year 8, U14, U16, O16.

  • Students will compete in the age category as of January 1st. If they have a birthday on January 1st, they will be in the category below what they turn. For example, if a student turns 14 on January 1st, they are in the U14 category.

  • Students must participate in a minimum of three events.

  • Bags must be kept on the hostel hill during running events.

  • Seniors are to wear appropriate exercise clothing in house colours.

  • Juniors are to wear PE gear but can identify with their house by wearing face paint, ribbons in hair, bandanas etc.

Pre-qualifying events

  • Pre-qualifying trials for Year 7 High Jump held on Monday 17 February lunchtime in the gym.

  • Pre-qualifying trials for Year 8 High Jump held on Tuesday 18 February lunchtime in the gym.

  • 800m (straight final) held on Wednesday 19 February lunchtime. Meet on the field.

  • 1500m (straight final) held on Thursday 20 February lunchtime. Meet on the field.

  • Triple Jump will be run on Monday 24 February.

House Relays (Week 5)

Wednesday 26 February: Senior House Relays

Friday 28 February: Junior House Relays

Sports Notices:

Touch on the Field
Starting week 3 and continuing on all ODD weeks, Lana Whipp and Dan Cullen will be running touch-rugby on the school field at 8:10am when senior assembly is on for any year 7-10.

Student Coach Workshop

Otago secondary schools sports association is holding interactive workshops for students who coach and are interested in developing their skills. There will be guest speakers and an array of different topics covered such as planning, coaching a skill, athlete-centred coaching, ACC and sports-specific coaching. This will be held 9am-3pm on Thursday 26 March, senior students wanting to register come to the SportsHub or send an email to sports@mtaspiring.school.nz

Girls Smash Cricket

On Wednesdays at 4pm there will be a free cricket competition for girls in year 7/8, no experience necessary! Come along and enjoy music, lollies, appearances by Otago Sparks and heaps of prizes. Start date is February 26 through to March 25, teams will be six a side but don’t worry if you can't make a team as individuals are welcome. Biathlon
On February 29 Snow Farm is holding a free come and try biathlon day for year 7-13 students from 3-5pm. This will be an introduction to the sport, having a go with their safe laser rifles and take part in a mini ‘run and shoot’ race. Enduro

Te Anau enduro secondary schools competition is being held on Saturday 7 March. This is a four hour lap style multi sport race with the choice of kayaking, mountain biking and running. Each lap takes about 30 minutes to complete and you can do whatever lap you want to do, whenever! If kayaking isn’t your thing no stress! You can simply bike and/or run for the duration of the race.
Enter as a solo competitor or in a team of three (either male or female).

MTB

The South Island School MTB championships are held on 27-29 March at the Mt Hutt bike Park in Methven. Entries are opening soon and events tend to fill up quickly. If you would like to compete in any events (Enduro, Downhill, Crosscountry) please come and sign up at the sports hub or send an email to sports@mtaspiring.school.nz

Adventure Race

The South Island Secondary Schools Adventure Racing Championships are being held on the 14 March in Cromwell. Students enter in a group of four in either males, females or mixed category. This race can take anywhere from 8-12 hours to complete and includes disciplines of MTB, trekking, kayaking, abseiling and navigation experience. It is important that teams are able to and are competent with navigating using a compass and topographic map, in any weather conditions and the dark. OSSSA Athletics

The Otago Secondary Schools Athletics are being held on the 13-14 March at the Caledonian Ground, Dunedin. Students may enter four individual events plus one relay OR three individual events plus both relays (Maximum five entries). This is also a qualifier for the South Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championship that is being held on the 4- 5 April at Nga Puna Wai sports hub, Christchurch. There is a limit of three athletes from one school per event. Spaces will fill up quickly so if you would like to compete please come and sign up at the SportsHub or send an email to sports@mtaspiring.school.nz

Sports Results

Archery MAC student and archery competitor Zoe Antone won silver and gold at the Archery New Zealand National Championship last week in Auckland. Zoe got silver in her 720 ranking round and then went on to secure gold in her Individual Matchpay. Congratulations on your outstanding efforts Zoe!!
