Term 1 has seen students participate in a huge array of activities. Now we are looking ahead to Term 2.

REVIEW OF TERM 1

Congratulations everyone - we’ve made it through the busiest term of school sport! It has been fabulous to see large numbers of students getting involved in the huge array of activities which have been on offer to them this term - both social and competitive. The teamwork, sportsmanship, enjoyment, hard work and awesome attitudes that we have seen from the students this term has been outstanding and we can’t wait to watch everyone grow and take on new challenges over the rest of the year.

Living in a location like Wanaka, we’re always going to be blessed with great outdoor activities on our doorstep, but for many sports, our location means lots of travel and for the support that our students get from their coaches, managers, teachers and parents, we are truly grateful.

Here is some information for our Year 11-13 Netball Players from the Central Lakes Netball Representative Committee.

The Central Lakes Netball representative season for U16 and U18 is fast approaching. Here are the important dates for you all to plan for the upcoming representative season.

ORIENTEERING

The Southland Schools Orienteering Champs is coming up on Sunday 19 May at Fosbender Park. Even though this is a Southland event, they have opened it up to Otago schools. This means that students competing in this event will appear on the results, however, they will not be eligible for certificates/placings since this is a Southland event.

Please note that the school will not be taking teams to this event. It will be a parent-led event, so parents/caregivers will be responsible for transport, accommodation and supervision, the school will process the entries only. Please read the information below and contact the Sports Hub if you are wanting to enter.

ATHLETICS

The Mount Aspiring College athletics team has just returned from an outstanding weekend at the South Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships in Timaru. The team won South Island titles, broke a South Island record and achieved numerous podium finishes and personal bests in their events. Congratulations to all the athletes for their fantastic performances and thank you to Mandy Enoka for being a fabulous team manager.

Last weekend a team of 20 Years 7and 8s headed to Dunedin to compete in the Otago Primary School Swimming Champs. For many of our athletes this was their first event outside of Central Otago, and with more than 370 Otago school students participating, and it sure made for an exciting day!

The whole team was really supportive of each other and we definitely were one of the loudest schools up in the grandstand! We had some outstanding performances from our students and special mention must go to Hana Carnie (Year 8) who broke the girls 12 and over Otago Primary School Swimming Championships record in the 50m backstroke.

Finally, a big thank you must go to all the parents who made this event possible for our MAC students and also to those who volunteered to help run the event - Lou Carnie (Team Manager), Jaime Hutter (time keeping) and Jen Chandler (selling programmes).

TOP BIKE

Last week, three Years 7/8 teams competed in the annual Top Bike Competition in Alexandra. Teams of six (3 girls and 3 boys) competed in three disciplines: a skills course, grass track racing and a mountain bike team time trial. It was a beautiful day and the students enjoyed the day out competing against other Central Otago schools. Congratulations to our team of Brodie Radford, Grace Sullivan, Emily Boswell, Bill Dobson, Willis McCarroll and Parker Collins who won the Year 7/8 Competition. 

ROWING

From 18-23 March a team of 20 students from Mount Aspiring joined a total of 2112 athletes from over 100 schools around the country to race in the Maadi Cup Regatta, the National Secondary Schools Championships Rowing Regatta. The event is the pinnacle of high school rowing in New Zealand, and the largest secondary school sporting event in the southern hemisphere, so it is always an event to remember. With the Maadi parade, cheering on our teammates from the sideline, competing hard, making some good Maadi swaps, and taking in the energy as the U18 eights came past at the end of the week, it was all such a good time and we couldn’t be more grateful for the experience.

We had athletes competing in a total of 16 different events over the week, racing across various age groups and classes in single, double, and quadruple sculls, producing noteworthy performances in many of these categories. We worked hard and managed to qualify many boats for finals, racing amongst the fastest and fittest in the country in 5 A Finals, 5 B Finals, 2 C Finals, and a D final, coming away with some commendable results and many cherished memories.

The boys U18 Novice 2x of Hugo Sinclair and Harry Hope brought home a bronze medal for the club, a satisfying and well-deserved result after a season of dedication and hard work. The Girls U18 4x of Annie Wells, Annika Massey, Lola Ritchie, Sienna Marsden + coxswain Caroline Smith placed 5th, and the U18 2x of Annie and Annika also placed 5th, with these U18 level performances being recognised by a Top Ten badge. The boy’s Novice U18 4x of Hugo Sinclair, Harry Hope, Will Pascoe, Alex Pederson + coxswain Caroline Smith finished 6th by a slim margin, and the very newly put-together crew of Lucy Radford, Sienna Marsden, Meg Ritchie, Catty David + coxswain Emily Hunt raced outstandingly in the Girls U16 4x to finish 8th.

The novice girls outdid themselves at their first Maadi ever, gaining valuable racing and regatta experience after a season of questionable conditions. These novice and U15 crews all competed strongly, with the girls U18 Novice 4x of Meg Ritchie, Alianna Hay, Catty David, Caroline Smith + coxswain Emily Hunt winning their B Final.

For our U18 rowers, Maadi marked the end of our time rowing for MAC. All our U18 boats qualified for finals, with the boys U18 2x of Philip Massey and Anton Jones finishing in the top half of an extremely competitive field, and a boys U18 4x taking the water at Maadi for the first time in a couple of years and competing strongly.

None of this would have happened without the incredibly dedicated coaching over the season from Matt Rickard and Rob Bruce and the support staff of Angela Rickard and Will Radford.

RUGBY

The MAC first XV recently kicked off the 2024 season with a pre-season/trial match against Central Southland College in Winton. After a long van trip down, we were lucky to arrive to warm, sunny conditions - perfect for fast-flowing and exciting rugby. The game, being a trial match, was played in the format of three 20-minute thirds. The first third saw MAC assert themselves with strong carries and tackles, however we were unable to get across the line ending with the score tied at 0-0 after 20. The second 20 went much the same, as we blew out some pre-season cobwebs in lineouts and our handling. Entering the final 20, the score was still tied at 0-0, and with about 10 minutes left in the game Central Southland was awarded a penalty try after a dangerous tackle by one of our forwards. In spite of this, we fought back hard with a wonderful try scored by Jackson Clark down the right sideline with about seven minutes to play. Down by 2 points with 2 minutes left on the clock MAC capitalised on a penalty kick that missed touch 10 metres out from our own tryline by spreading the ball wide which resulted in a runaway try to Tom Sides. The game finished 12-7 to MAC, with plenty of work to do to polish up our execution and structure. Thanks to coaches Wayne Enoka and Jason Clarke, as well as managers Di Roy, Belinda Sides and Pip Miller for all of your hard work to get us on the field.

We have a large number of students who have been selected to play for Otago and Central Otago Representative basketball teams in the U16 age group. This is an awesome achievement and one that requires a lot of commitment from both the players and parents as they travel weekly to Dunedin for the Otago teams and Cromwell/Queenstown for the Central Otago teams. Congratulations to everyone involved and we wish you all the best for your upcoming tournaments.
