Over the next week we have a number of sports teams heading around the South Island to represent MAC across many different sporting codes.

  • Good luck to both the teams and individuals who are competing in the South Island Secondary School Triathlon Championships in Oamaru this weekend.
  • We have a strong team of athletes heading to Dunedin next Friday, to take on the rest of Otago at the Otago Secondary School Athletics Champs.
  • Our rowers are off to Twizel next Thursday to compete in the South Island Secondary School Rowing Championships. Their hard work throughout the season is now coming into play, with the pinnacle event of MAADI Cup less than a month away.

Good luck to everyone involved. Safe travels, have fun and we can’t wait to hear all about it when you return. We want to say a huge thank you to all the parents, teachers and coaches involved, who make these opportunities possible for our students. You’re all amazing!

MAC Enduro

Congratulations to all of the students who competed in the MAC Enduro Champs last week. Despite some issues with the timing system it was a great day all round, with perfect riding conditions after the rain and it was awesome to see the sportsmanship, enthusiasm and smiles from everyone throughout the event, even after some good wipeouts! A special thank you must go to our ‘broken arm brigade’ for being the chief marshalls and bike engineers for the day - your help was very much appreciated.

Also, thank you so much to the event sponsors Bike Glendhu, Racers Edge Wanaka, Mons Royale and Cognitive Cycle Works, and to the volunteers, parents and caregivers who gave up their time to come out and support the riders. Finally a massive thanks to Kelsi McKay from Bike Glendhu who ran the event so smoothly.

MAC Swimming Sports

The MAC Swimming Sports Day was a great success, providing students the opportunity to gain confidence and showcase their swimming skills. An astonishing five records were broken and many personal bests were achieved. Even the teachers didn’t want to miss out on the fun and they entered a very competitive team in the House Relays, giving the students a run for their money!

Challenge Wanaka Secondary School Half Ironman Championships

MAC entered a boys team into the Challenge Wanaka Secondary Schools Half Ironman teams event two weeks ago. These students all competed as individuals in the School event two days before, but they came together to compete in the much longer course as a team. The race involved a 1.9km swim at Glendhu Bay, a 90km cycle loop out to Hawea and back to Glendhu (each of the athletes cycled 45km), and a scenic and very hot 21km run up through Bike Glendhu (each runner covered 10.5km). This team gave it their absolute all and finished in 2nd place. An outstanding effort!

The team consisted of:

Swimmer - Jack Sides

1st bike leg - Tom Sides

2nd bike leg - Josh Moody

1st run - Xavier Taylor

2nd run - Tom Sides

Mountain Biking

MAC has a strong contingent of avid mountain bikers and this week we are talking to three of them who have had a busy summer chasing races around the country.

Over the school holidays Max Bagley (Year 10) attended two of the three rounds of the 2023 Mountain Bike NZ Cross Country Championships. In Oamaru he fought his way to 3rd place and a week later in Christchurch managed 4th. These placings earned him 3rd equal in the New Zealand Championship at his first attempt - an outstanding effort!

Last Saturday Max attended his first NZ National Cross Country Mountain Bike Championship at Coronet Peak. The course was brutal and stacked with New Zealand’s best XC riders and it gave him a real taste of what high level competition is. It was a real spectacle to watch, especially with the National Downhill Champs being run at the same time. With a gutsy effort he achieved 8th in the U17 Male category and he walks away with very valuable experience.

Arnaud Mackenzie (Year 9) has been having a great time chasing Downhill and Enduro races around the South Island this summer. Last weekend he raced at the National Downhill Champs at Coronet Peak, placing 9th in the Under 15 Male category - an awesome effort! He still has plenty of racing to go this season with Crankworx, the MAC Downhill, the South Island Secondary School Champs and other local events coming up.

Arnaud is also part of the Cardrona Bike Park Development Squad along with Ruby Smith, Morgan Antone, Ryan Hartnell and Bede Laming.

Ruby Smith (Year 10) has spent her summer in pursuit of all things Mountain Biking. Last weekend at Nationals things didn't really go to plan for her, she had a few crashes and didn’t come away with the result she wanted, but she still achieved a 10th placing in the National Downhill U17 Female Championships! Ruby still has plenty of racing ahead of her for the season with the Crankworx summer series, Dirt Town Queens Enduro, MAC Downhill and XC, SS South Islands, and heaps of other events - so she’s definitely one to keep an eye on!

Equestrian

On 25 and 26 February the Dressage Southland Regional Ford Tournament was held in Gore. MAC had two young riders attending. Heidi Kendrick rode Kazmere Curiosity in Level 3 dressage and gained two podium places. Abbie Cameron-Small riding Got the Giggles won first place in both tests 0A & 0B for novice riders, and won the highest score overall for arena 2. Congratulations girls.
