As part of the New Zealand Health and Physical Education curriculum, we cover age-appropriate sexuality education through a unit of work called Navigating the Journey. Through Term Two, Year 7 to Year 10 students will be participating in this programme. Each week, an overview of the forthcoming lessons will be available here.

WEEKS 4 AND 5: NAVIGATING THE JOURNEY

Year 7:

Week 4: Setting our boundaries. Students will explore different kinds of relationships and identify the qualities they value in them. Identify and appreciate how their friends and whanau support them through challenging situations. How to be a LGBTQIA+ ally.

Week 5: Explore the concept of intimacy and behaviours that may feel right at different levels of intimacy. Explore concepts about consent and identify what giving and receiving consent looks like. Sexual orientation: Students will affirm diversity in relationships and discuss discrimination against people who are same sex attracted, and identify ways to challenge discrimination.

Year 8:

Week 4: Setting our boundaries. Students will explore different kinds of relationships and identify the qualities they value in them. Identify and appreciate how their friends and whanau support them through challenging situations. Intimacy and sexual attraction.

Week 5: Sexual orientation. Diversity in relationships. Discuss discrimination and identify ways to challenge discrimination. Intimacy. Consent. What does it mean? What does it look like?

Year 9:

Week 4: Continuing to discuss the impact of media messages about gender on people's sense of identity. Identify and discuss strategies to challenge gender stereotypes.

Week 5: Healthy Relationships. Whanaungatanga. Identify the qualities in a healthy relationship and individual rights and responsibilities in a relationship. Explore strategies to support healthy relationships and identify positive and negative behaviours in relationships and what is and isn't acceptable.

Year 10:

Week 4: Whanaungatanga: Identify that a healthy relationship has the qualities of a healthy friendship. Explore strategies to support positive relationships and interact with others respectfully. Identify people in their whanau and available support services if they are experiencing an unhealthy relationship. Relationship levels.

Week 5: Sexual relationships. Understand that not everyone is having sex. Identify a range of intimate and pleasurable activities that do not involve sexual intercourse. Understand that sexual activity does not need to result in sexual intercourse. Explore and describe diverse attitudes to values and sex.
