TOURNAMENT WEEK

Last week we had six MAC sports teams away competing at South Island Secondary School Winter Sports Tournaments. This week we look at two of these teams:

  • A Netball team: attended the South Island Secondary School Netball tournament in Invercargill

  • Senior A mixed Hockey team: attended the South Island Secondary School tournament in Oamaru.

SENIOR A MIXED HOCKEY TEAM

The 2023 Secondary Schools Sports Winter Tournament, comprising hockey, football, netball and rugby competitions, was held last week at various locations around the South Island.

We are thrilled to announce that the MAC hockey team won the South Island Mixed Tournament for the second year in a row!

To reach the final against St Peter's College, MAC defeated Wakatipu in a rematch described as the most exciting game of the season (5-2).

In the final, Hugh Ragg scored midway through the quarter from great passing play. There were a number of opportunities leading up to the second goal of the game scored by Georgia Chrisp in the second quarter. MAC continued to control the game through the midfield, with the occasional attack from St Peter's being met by the stoic MAC defence.

In the third quarter the subs were rolling quickly to keep the energy levels high, which paid off with two goals scored in quick succession. The first goal was unofficially scored by Georgia Chrisp, but with a mass of people around the net it was tough to see. But Hugh Ragg finished it off, and officially scored the point. The second goal of the quarter was scored in a penalty corner by Kynan March, who celebrated in style having scored against his old team.

Going into the final quarter with a score line of 4-0, St Peter's came out showing determination and played strong hockey scoring two good goals, one from field play and one from a penalty corner. This nudged MAC back into action and they returned to their attacking play which resulted in Thomas Benson scoring from a set play at a penalty corner.

A score of 5-2 in a final is a very convincing win and is indicative of the standard of hockey achieved by our MAC players throughout the season and the tournament.

Congratulations to all the members of the MAC team who played with such skill and spirit, and thank you to their team manager Rachel Prendergast, coach James Adams and parents, caregivers and whānau for their support.

NETBALL A TEAM

The A Netball team had a busy week competing at the South Island Secondary School Netball Tournament in Invercargill last week. Here is a day-by-day account of the week from Jessie Winter (Year 13).

DAY 1: Today was our first day competing at SISS. This morning we played against Dunstan, beating them 20-19. We were very stoked with this as they are in the same region and we have come across them lots finding ourselves on both sides of the result. Our second game was against Verdon, which unfortunately we lost 31-38. Although we didn’t come away with the result we had hoped for, we felt that we played well as Verdon is a very strong team.

DAY 2: Today our first game was against Christchurch Girls High School. To get into the top 16 we needed to beat them as we had already lost a game. Unfortunately this did not happen, and we ended up losing by 12. We are still extremely proud of this effort, Christchurch Girls are a very strong side and we had the smallest goal difference of both Dunstan and Verdon when they played Christchurch girls. Our second game was against Burnside. After a slow start we ended up pulling away in the second half and the final score was 37-20 to us.

DAY 3: This morning we played Ashburton. We were tied almost the whole way, but unfortunately time was against us and we ended up losing 33-32. This was quite disappointing for us as a team, but we debriefed and dropped it ready for the next game. Second up was Rangiora, who we knew were going to be tough. We put up a great fight but lost 33-28. Although the outcome didn’t go our way, we are super proud of our efforts as Rangiora are very strong.

DAY 4: Our first game today was against Roncalli. We started strong and came away winning 34-27, which put us into the 25/26 playoffs. For our last game we played Marian College. This was an important game, not only for ending the tournament on a high, but also because this was the last game for 7 of the players as we are in year 13. We started strong and led the whole way, taking the win 31-29.

Although we didn’t reach our goal this tournament, we played some incredible teams, learned so much about ourselves and each other and we had an absolute blast of a time. To come 25th out of 72 teams is a great achievement and one we are proud of.

Thank you to our manager Kate, who organised so much and was so encouraging towards our team, and woke us up early to get ready for the day - I hope your knuckles aren’t too sore! Finally, thank you to our coaches Janine and Jen for your two years of unwavering encouragement, enthusiasm and love for our team. Thank you for your expertise and the experiences that you have given us - we are truly grateful.

MULTISPORT

Congratulations to the MAC all-girls team who won the primary category (Years 7 and 8) of theThe Peak to Peak Winter Multisport Race in Queenstown last weekend. Their time also meant they placed second overall in the secondary schools section (Years 9 to 13).

The event saw the girls complete in the following stages: ski down the Remarkables ski field (Eva), bike down the Remarkables access road (Paige), kayak from Frankton beach to the Queenstown foreshore (Brooke), run to the base of Coronet Peak ski field (Isla), bike up to the Skippers Canyon turnoff road (Paige), bike the final uphill to the base buildings of Coronet Peak ski field (Eva).

What an extraordinary effort from Isla, Eva, Brooke and Paige. Everyone at MAC is so proud of you all!
