LONG JUMP

We had to cancel our long jump event at our annual Athletics Day today for health and safety reasons.

We are very grateful to the Aspiring Athletics club which has offered to hold the long jump event for us on Monday 24 February at 3.30pm at the Wānaka Rec Centre at Three Parks.

Any student who wants to compete in the long jump event is welcome to do so, with the main purpose being to qualify for upcoming regional competitions.

Students who wish to compete can simply turn up on the day. Students do not need to be a member of the Aspiring Athletics Club, and every student is welcome to attend.

If you have any questions, or require further information, please contact Neil Stuart: stuartn@mtaspiring.school.nz

CRICKET

Sam celebrating scoring his century vs Auckland. This photo made the front page of the NZ Cricket website.

Earlier in January, Sam Harper captained the Otago Under 17 Cricket team in the National tournament held in Lincoln, Christchurch. This is the premier national tournament for the top young cricketers in the country.  Sam’s performance was incredible. From the 6 teams involved (Otago, Canterbury, Wellington, Central Districts, Northern Districts, and Auckland) Sam ended up in the top 5 run scorers in the tournament, and was the top run scorer for his year group. His best performance was scoring a century (121 runs) vs Auckland which was the 3rd top score in the tournament. Otago end up coming 3rd which is a great result.

CHALLENGE WĀNAKA

Last week, more than 250 Mount Aspiring College students competed in Challenge Wānaka Triathlon events. On Friday morning, a large contingent of Years 7 and 8 students tackled the

Intermediate course, consisting of a 200m swim, a 6km bike and 3km run. These students competed either as individuals or teams and it was fantastic to see so many smiling faces out on the course.

Once the Year 7 and 8’s were finished, the Adaptive Challenge event took place.  Seven of our students participated in the event: Reuben Beston, Olivia Hood, Hugo Bridgewater, Fleur Maydon, Jake Brewster, Otis Taylor and Jacob Pardoe.  We are so incredibly proud of these students who took part in The Adapted Challenge Wānaka event on Friday, in partnership with MINT. The event challenged the athletes in so many ways with nervous anticipation replaced with an enormous sense of accomplishment at completing the challenge. MACs core values of whanaungatanga (sense of belonging), Ihi (resilience) and manaakitanga (pride in one’s self and others) were on show In abundance.

Hugo Bridgewater (Year 9) approaches the finish line with his awesome group of supporters.

In the afternoon, 90 senior students hit the course competing in the U14, U16 and U19 categories. This triathlon encompasses two events in one race.  The students are competing in both the Challenge Wānaka Triathlon and also the Otago Secondary School Triathlon Championships.  Our students’ attitude and sportsmanship was outstanding, both on and off the course. A huge effort from all of our students led to many podium finishes and MAC retained its crown as the ‘Top Performing School at the Challenge Wānaka Secondary School Event’ winning the Bill Godsall Trophy for the third year running.
