PRINCIPALS UPDATE

Wayne Bosley —

Weekly update from Wayne Bosley.

Kia ora,

Week 6 has been another busy one with many of our Year 8 students away on camp, whilst others have been to career talks, snowcaving, the student elections for our nominated BOT reps, and of course, the highly anticipated Year 11 dinner tonight. I hope to see many of you there!

PROPERTY

At the time of writing, I expect the college to have been included in a list of Otago secondary schools whose student roll has exceeded 1000 students in Thursday’s ODT.

Currently we have 1050 students at the college and next year we believe we will have 1100 students from Year 7-13.

Our roll projections for the next decade predict us to continue to grow to be around 1600 students in 2030.

Alongside the Ministry of Education we have developed a five stage campus property plan for 1600 students. To that end infrastructure work was completed earlier this year to allow for construction to begin. We have recently been informed that the college has received a nine year licence to occupy the old Wanaka Swimming Pool site so we are planning to add some temporary buildings there to cope with the first three of our existing classrooms being demolished to allow for construction.

The Ministry has put a detailed case to Cabinet to increase the scope of the plan to build a campus for 1800 students. The additional space available due to the revision of the projected roll growth up from 1600 to 1800 will yield an extra 300 square metres of building space to be invested into gymnasiums and multi purpose spaces.

We have been granted the funding for Stage 1, which provides a two story block situated on the south side of the quad with Arts facilities on the ground floor and homeroom classroom spaces on the second floor. This construction is due to begin in early 2020 with the hope that we will gain Cabinet support to allow for a multi stage approach which will decrease the construction time.

COMMUNICATING WITH US

We have often stated through our vision, that the key to effective support for students is, "that in partnership with the community, we will help individuals to develop self-responsibility and confidence to strive for personal and academic excellence in order for each student to reach their potential as global citizens.” One of the ways to facilitate partnerships with the community is a healthy understanding between the staff, parents and students. We seek to work constructively with all stakeholders to unlock the potential in your children, our students. As a college we welcome your input and your knowledge in order to continually improve the social and learning environment at Mount Aspiring College.
