SPORTS NOTICES

YEAR 7/8 KORU GAMES

The Koru Games is a South Island Schools tournament held in Lincoln each year for Year 7/8 students, involving 18 different sports. Here is the link to their website for more information: Koru Games. MAC has taken a Year 8 Netball team to this tournament for the last two years and it has been an amazing experience for the teams. Competing alongside 1600 students from around the South Island, it is an awesome opportunity for the students to experience a tournament environment and also to compete against sports teams from outside our region.

When: This year it is being held from 24-26 September.

This year we are excited to increase the amount of students that we will take to the tournament. We will be taking:

  • 1 x Year 8 netball team
  • 1 x Year 7/8 boys football team
  • 1 x Year 7/8 girls football team

Trials: If your child is interested in trialling for one of the teams, please complete this form by Saturday 15 June. Please note that students are welcome to trial for more than one team, but they will only be able to play one sport at the tournament: Koru Games Registration

NETBALL

Last weekend, our MAC A, B, 10A and 9A netball teams travelled to Dunedin to compete in the Otago Secondary Schools Netball Tournament. They had two full days of netball and came away feeling pretty proud of their efforts, and rightfully so. Read through the team reports for the Senior A and B teams below for great insights into their tournament. Reports from the 9A and 10A will be published in the newsletter next week.

A Team

Last Sunday/Monday the MAC A team competed at the Otago Secondary School Netball Tournament held in the Dunedin Edgar Centre. This was our first trip away playing against students our age, instead of the women that we usually play on a Friday night. This was a great opportunity to put into action what we had been practising for over the 4 months prior to the tournament. We really bonded as a team and were able to execute everything we needed to play our best netball. We had two birthdays during the tournament, so we played some fun games and had our coach Matz cook us some delicious food. This helped us prepare and fuel for the big tournament ahead of us.

First up, we played St Hildas and knew this was going to be a tough game to start with, however, we played some great netball and beat them in the second half. However, they came away with the win, and the final score was 23-34. This loss made us eager for the next game against St Kevins to be a win and fortunately it was at 38-25.

We then won our first game on Monday morning against Dunstan (31-26), which put us in position to play Wakatipu for 5th and 6th. In our final game against Wakatipu, we played hard and finished in 5th place with a score of 37-29. We came away from the tournament with 3 wins and 1 loss. This is the highest the MAC A netball team has reached in OSS for the last few years! We are very proud of our efforts, as well as the efforts of all the other MAC Teams competing.

B Team

Last weekend the MAC B netball team went to the Otago Secondary Schools Netball Tournament. It was a really great experience and we all learnt a lot while getting to play some really good netball. This tournament was very different to what we are used to, we usually play against Wānaka women, so playing against a range of school girls was very different for us.

In our first game we had a very hard battle against St Hilda’s but in the end they won by two points, the score being 29-31. We went into our second game really wanting a win, and thankfully we were all working really well together as a team allowing us to come away with a great win of 53-6 against Trinity College who put up a good fight. This put us into the position to play for spots 5th-8th.

On day two we played South Otago Girls High School. We wanted another win, so that we could play for 5th and 6th and luckily we came away with another good win at 31-15. Our final game was against Dunstan High School. This was the play-off for 5th and 6th. We were stoked to be in the position of being in the top half of the teams no matter what happened in this game, but we still wanted to put our everything into the game to hopefully come away with 5th. We did just that and fought a hard battle against Dunstan who were winning at half time. Our whole team came together and fought hard for the last 20 minutes of the tournament and we managed to come back and win with a score of 26-21. This meant that we came away with 5th overall which we were all pretty happy with.

This tournament was a great chance for our team to bond and we even had a team spa night on Sunday night. Over this tournament we really came together as a unit and our amazing coach Gina was there for us every step of the way.

MAC Rugby Match Reports:

MAC Girls 1st XV vs Wakatipu 1st XV

Another solid effort from the girls this week. Although coming back with a loss against Wakatipu - we were under the pump for numbers again. We began with 13 players (11+2 fill ins) due to sickness and school trips and ended up with 12 after a bad injury. Meg Hoyland went for another magnificent run away try, however got ankle tapped before the try line and rolled her ankle. This did not stop Meg as she still scored and then attended to her ankle. Our Coach, Richard rushed her to hospital while the game proceeded. The overall score was 34-39, tries were scored by Meg (2), Alianna, Kate, Caoimhe and Sophie. Tee kicking was done by Caoimhe as Kate had injured her ankle too - two tries were converted. Player of the day was received by Alianna and Caoimhe. They both have stepped up in their own way. Caoimhe is usually a fill-in, however took the role of converting the tries. Alianna is a great member in the squad and has shown awesome all round skills and scored her first try for the season. Shout out to one of our fill-ins Sam, she is a hosteller who has never played rugby but came with amazing enthusiasm and gave it a shot. She really ripped into it taking some hard tackles that were so inspiring. Thanks also to our; coaches, referees, sponsors and the behind the scenes help (Belinda and Pip). We are so, so grateful for all the support! Next week is our last game for the round. We are travelling to Cromwell where we will expect a tough but great game.

MAC Boys 1st XV vs Dunstan High School 1st XV

Saturday's game was a big occasion - a home game against our rivals Dunstan High School First XV. Coming off some good training and video review sessions we knew what we had to do to get the result we wanted and came into this match confident in our structure. The game started off with Dunstan applying a lot of pressure in our 22, however a loose pass was intercepted on the bounce by Tom Sides who ran the length to score under the pins, converting the try to make it 7-0 MAC early in the first half. Dunstan fought back with an unconverted try and a penalty kick, making it 8-7 to Dunstan going into the second half. The second half became a tussle, however MAC was clearly the better team applying a lot more pressure and finding themselves in their half a lot more often than not. However, we couldn't count out our opposition, who scored a try in the corner with eight minutes left on the clock. Remaining unconverted, Dunstan's try gave them a 13-7 lead. With a mountain to climb in the dying minutes of the game, our boys showed determination, patience and courage. With two minutes left, Ryan Enoka scored off a storming run breaking a number of tackles, dotting down on the sideline making it a one point game with the conversion to come. Tom Sides was faced with a sideline conversion to win the game for MAC, striking it sweetly down the middle to make it 14-13 to MAC. After one last defensive effort, Dunstan knocked on the ball and the final whistle blew, marking MAC's first win over Dunstan First XV in at least 3 previous seasons. Special acknowledgements go to our coaches Wayne Enoka and Jason Clarke. Wayne, I hope you get well soon and are back training with us as soon as possible. Jason, thanks for taking us during the week and inspiring us from the sideline on Saturday. Many thanks to our manager Sally Soper, TIC's Belinda Sides and Pip Miller and our sponsors.

BASKETBALL

This term we have two of our girls basketball teams (Senior A and Junior A) playing in the local Wānaka Basketball Competition. This week they played each other and had a great battle out on the court. The game finished with only 5 points between the teams! It was fantastic to see the smiles out on the court and huge thanks must go to their staff coaches Sally Hart and Aimee Fergusson.

The MAC Senior Boys A team also had a good battle on the court this week with a Wakatipu team in the A grade of the Central Otago Basketball Competition. They were leading for most of the really tight game, but just couldn’t quite hold on in the last few minutes and ended up losing 48-53.
