GYMNASTICS
Congratulations to MAC students Charlie Nisbet (Year 9) and Sami Reid (Year 7) who recently competed at the 2024 XP New Zealand Gymnastic Championships in Palmerston North. Charlie and Sami were competing in their first nationals and achieved excellent results.
On the first day of the team competition in the men’s artistic gymnastics, Charlie placed 3rd (pommel) and 2nd (rings and horizontal bar), achieving the 4th highest score in the competition by .05 points.
In the all-round competition on day two, Charlie had remarkably consistent scoring and finished 4th again by 0.3. Charlie also received a proficiency award.
Sami competed in the teams and apparatus finals, delivering well-executed routines, placing 5th overall in bar and 9th in floor to earn a 4th place overall on day one. On day two, Sami placed 12th overall, and earned a proficiency award, to finish off her first nationals.
Well done to Charlie and Sami on delivering such skilled performances and achieving excellent results at a national-level event.
RUGBY
2024 saw a record number of Te Kura o Tititea athletes selected to represent Ōtākau Ki Uta (Otago Country Māori) rugby teams for the Te Wai Pounamu (South Island) Rugby tournament. This included a tāne U17 team coached by 2024 MAC 1st XV coaches Wayne Enoka and Jason Clarke, an U15 tāne team, and for the first time Ki Uta were able to field an U17 kōhine team. John Cooper also supported the kaupapa, bringing his first aid skills to trainings and tournament.
Following weeks of rugby training along with gaining confidence performing the Ōtākau rugby haka and waiata, the teams headed to the Te Wai Pounamu tournament in Christchurch, during the last weekend of the October school holidays. Being hosted in a marae and experiencing a range of learnings in tikanga, tākaro and mau rākau brought an enjoyable cultural learning element to the tournament. Staying at a marae was a new experience for a number of the attending rangatahi.
Te Wai Pounamu Tournament brings together Māori representative rugby teams from Murihiku (Southland), Ōtākau Ki Tai (Otago Metro), Ōtākau Ki Uta (Otago Country) Waitaha (Canterbury) and Te Tauihu (Tasman/Nelson). It is fiercely competitive, but also represents whanaungatanga and cultural connection between the players, coaches and whanau.
The 2024 tournament was very successful for our country teams, with the Ki Uta Kōhine team placing second overall and the Ki Uta Tāne U15's only coming second by points differential.
Special congratulations go to Kate Watson for receiving the Kōhine Back of the Year and Cory Enoka for receiving the U15 Tāne Best and Fairest player award, in the Otago Community Rugby awards

RUGBY
The New Zealand Junior Girls Rugby Tournament was held in Auckland on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 September. There were 57 teams from across NZ, with 90% of them coming from the North Island. Over 900 girls played in the tournament.
MAC had five Year 7/8 students playing in the Central Otago Hinds Team: Sophia McClintock, Lilya Cochrane, Rosie Hirst, Naiah Beazley and Janey Mavor. Coached by Aaron Callaghan (Wānaka), Tom Impey (Queenstown), and Peter Breen (Alexandra), and managed by Karla Beazley (Wānaka), the Hinds performance at the tournament was outstanding. Despite being outsized, they showcased exceptional game awareness, teamwork, grit and determination, winning four out of the five matches they played. Their efforts earned them the Overall Team of the Tournament Trophy.
In addition to their on-field success, the Hinds excelled in the festival’s unique scoring system, which emphasises fair play, sportsmanship, and positive behaviour both on and off the field. As Overall Tournament winners, they exemplified the four pillars of the festival: enjoyment, sustainability, sportsmanship and empowerment.
