MINDFULNESS AT MAC

Carol Bradley —

Kia kaha, kia maia, kia manawanui - Be strong, be brave, be steadfast

Over the course of term 4, year 10 students will be participating in an international course on mindfulness.

The course is designed by the Mindfulness in Schools project and is called dot be (.b)'

.b’ stands for ‘stop’ and ‘be’, capturing an important life-skill: being able to step back from the busyness of habitual activity and the relentless chatter of the mind. This offers greater space and clarity to make choices that support well-being in many ways.

At its most basic level, mindfulness helps train your attention to be more aware of what is actually happening, rather than worrying about what has happened or might happen. We learn to bring greater curiosity to whatever it is we experience. Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founding father of secular mindfulness, described this skill as ‘being alive and knowing it’.

Each week I will post an overview of the lesson and a link to the website.

Week 1 Overview

An introduction to mindfulness

The aim of this lesson is to introduce mindfulness in a way that is engaging, entertaining and persuasive.

For pupils to have their first taste of mindfulness practice and to understand that .b is all about possibilities. The brain is something  you can train to be in the present moment. Mindfulness can help you get out of a bad place or get into a good one and really flourish.
