ROWING
South Island Secondary School Championships
The squad of 28 Mount Aspiring College rowers had a very successful weekend up in Twizel at the South Island Secondary School Champs, coming away with many awesome results in 8 A-finals and 6 B-finals (including 1 gold and 2 bronze medals). Day one consisted of 23 heats throughout the day, starting off strong with the girls under-15 quad with Catie Pascoe, Neve Twiname, Lily Garrett, Alianna Hay and coxswain Emily Hunt placed 5th in their heat and made it through to repechage the following day where they placed 4th and then went on to come 6th in the B-final.
This was then followed with the girls under-18 double sculls with Annie Wells and Annika Massey who placed 1st in their heat which secured them a spot straight into the A-final where they won bronze! Sienna Marsden placed 2nd in her heat for the girls under-16 single which got her a spot straight into the A-final alongside ex-Mount Aspiring rowers Fenella Millen and Hana Jones where Sienna placed 4th in a very tight finish.
In the boys novice double, Hugo Sinclair and Harry Hope placed 1st in their heat by a decent 12 seconds which set them up perfectly to take out the gold medal in the A-final with a quick time of 7 minutes and 32 seconds. William Pascoe and Hugh Ragg also raced in the boys novice double and did very well with a placing of 6th in the B-final. Lola Ritchie smashed out her girls under-17 single sculls placing second in her heat, securing a ride straight to A-finals where she placed 8th in the South Island.
In the girls under-16 quad with Lucy Radford, Sienna Marsden, Ebony Howes, Catty David and coxswain Caroline Smith placed 3rd in their heat on the first day in a very close race and then went on to dominate the repechage on day two by winning and securing a place in the A-final where they placed 8th. The two girls novice quads both did very well with Caroline Smith, Catty David, Meg Ritchie, Alianna Hay and coxswain Emily Hunt narrowly missed out on the A-final by 0.4 of a second but went on to smash out the B-final, placing 3rd. The second girls novice quad with Lily Garrett, Cameron Shore, Pippa Hartnett, Madi Smith and Coxwain Catie Pascoe did very well to place 7th in a tough first heat.
The boys novice quad and four with Hugh Ragg, Coast Morland, Joseph Combe, Edward Ives and coxswain Tom Irvine did very well for only their second time rowing together in the four. Phillip Massey did very well in his under-18 single to place 1st in the B-final and the boys under-18 double with Phillip Massey and Anton Jones placed 6th in the A-final which is an awesome result for under-18. The boys novice quad with Hugo Sinclair, Harry Hope, Will Pascoe, Alex Pedersen and coxswain Caroline Smith placed 2nd in their heat to guarantee a lane in the A-final where they closely placed 4th.
Finally the girls under-18 quad with Annie Wells, Annika Massey, Lola Ritchie, Sienna Marsden and coxswain Caroline Smith got an incredible result of 3rd place in the A-final. Overall it was a great weekend of racing for the whole squad and a massive thankyou to all of our amazing coaches: Rob, Matt, Nina and Olivia, club captain Will Radford, school rowing coordinator Angela Rickard and all of the parent helpers and supporters who made this regatta happen.

TOUCH RUGBY
Last weekend, the Mount Aspiring College Mixed Touch team represented MAC at the Otago Secondary Schools in Mosgiel. They played amazing considering the hot weather conditions, and developed even further as a team with support from one another. They unfortunately came away from it with a loss to Taieri College and Cromwell College but winning their last game to St Kevins College. The team is now currently working towards South Island Secondary Schools. We can’t wait to see what this tournament holds for the team.
