ARTS CORNER

Arts Department —

DRAMA NEWS:

Recently Year 11 drama students were fortunate enough to attend a full day physical theatre workshop with Sam Scott from Massive Theatre, Auckland. During this intensive workshop students learned about the language of movement and how to create a dramatic interpretation of a concept using only their bodies to communicate (lead photo). This work will lead into their upcoming devising assessment later this term.

Year 8 drama:  As part of our Macbeth unit, the students were tasked with creating a make-up look for Banquo's ghost. They used makeup and special effects techniques to convey the murdered character. Be warned.... some of their looks were very gruesome!

Girls Like That - MAC Senior Drama Production

Girls Like That by Evan Placey unapologetically confronts the ugly and complex effects of the invasion of privacy that social media has imposed on society. Scarlett’s naked picture is shared online and within seconds her reputation is left to the mercy of the unforgiving pecking order of her so-called friends and acquaintances. All jump to many conclusions but none are brave enough to help and support her as they all live in fear of being tainted by a “girl like that”.

This work will provoke and disconcert even whilst you sometimes find yourself laughing at the outlandish statements. Leaning into this uncomfortable conversation is the first step in helping our young people be honest about the negative aspects of the social media environment they engage in every day.

Trigger Warning. This work does contain some strong language and themes. Care should be taken when deciding the maturity of the attending audience. It is not recommended for children under the age of 14/15.

Performances of Thursday 22 and Friday 23 June at 7pm. Doors open at 6:40pm. Tickets are $10, available here on Eventfinda, some door sales available if not sold out.
