Review of Term 2

Congratulations everyone - we’ve made it through another super busy term of school sport! It has been fabulous to see large numbers of students getting involved in the huge array of activities which have been on offer to them this term - both social and competitive. The teamwork, sportspersonship, enjoyment, hard work and awesome attitudes that we have seen from the students this term has been outstanding and we can’t wait to watch everyone grow and take on new challenges over the rest of the year.

Living in a location like Wānaka, we’re always going to be blessed with great outdoor activities on our doorstep, but for many sports, our location means lots of travel. For the support our students get from their coaches, managers, umpires, teachers and parents, we are truly grateful.

CENTRAL LAKES NETBALL FESTIVAL

Last Thursday 66 Years 7 and 8 students travelled to Cromwell to compete in the Central Lakes Primary Schools Netball Festival. Forty-two teams from around Central Otago participated in the ‘Netball World Cup’ themed event. Our seven MAC teams were named after countries which are competing in the upcoming World Cup event - Australia, New Zealand, England, Fiji, South Africa, Jamaica and Scotland. A great fun day was had by everyone as they braved the freezing weather and netball was definitely the winner on the day! A huge thank you must go to our volunteer parent coaches, umpires, managers, drivers and supporters, for making our participation in this event possible.

FOOTBALL

This week we are celebrating Mia Gemmell in Year 9. She is absolutely football mad and has been playing since she was 5 years old.

She currently plays for the Wānaka Football Club and also trains twice weekly in the Ole Football programme year round. Last year Mia was selected (along with a few local boys) to travel to Wellington for a week-long training camp with the Ole Football Academy, which was a fantastic opportunity for her to see where football might lead her in the future.

This season Mia has been selected to play for the Wānaka U14 Mixed Tournament Team who are travelling to Christchurch during the holidays for a South Island Tournament. She is also currently one of the youngest members in the MAC Girls Football 1st XI and is loving playing with girls for once. She has also just been given the huge honour of being a flag bearer at three games in the Women’s FIFA World Cup next month, so keep an eye out for her on TV! Mia’s resilience, the effort she puts in year round and the passion she has for football is truly inspiring. Mia Gemmell is definitely a name to keep an eye on in the future. Great work Mia!

SQUASH

Last weekend the MAC squash team consisting of Oisin Corbett, Kyan Prince and Ethan Prince, travelled to Christchurch to participate in the South Island Secondary Schools Squash Competition. This was the first time that MAC was represented at the SISS competition and while quietly confident, the team was focused on the event being a learning experience for competitions later in the year.

MAC came up against St Andrews College ‘A’ in the first round and advanced to the semi-finals with a 3-0 win. In the semi-final, MAC played Marlborough Boys College ‘A’ and unfortunately were unable to get past the stronger, more experienced team. In the final play off for third and fourth, place they came up against Christchurch Boys High School A. They took the first game convincingly and were up 1-0. In the second, hard-fought game, Christchurch Boys walked away with the win, leaving it all down to the third and final game which MAC won. This result gave MAC a 2-1 win over Christchurch Boys High School.

The MAC team was awarded third place (out of 23 teams) which is an outstanding result for the team, with event organisers acknowledging their efforts and results in their first competition. The team's focus now turns to preparing for the the National Secondary Schools competition in Auckland in August.
