STUDENT ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS
Here we celebrate student achievement and showcase activities our students are involved in around college.
A huge thanks to the NZ Music Commission who funded the recent Musicians Mentoring in Schools programme. MAC was lucky enough to have Henry Francis from 'Soaked Oats' working with Years 10-13 Music students on songwriting, performance technique, audio production, tour planning and band marketing.
STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY
The Big Shout Out is a new campaign encouraging organisations to give a shout-out to their volunteers this June. We will be showcasing the efforts of some of our student volunteers this month, so keep a look out here and see what’s been going on.
This is our last Shout Out and this week it goes to Year 10 student Tasmin Murphy. And in fact, we are not the only ones celebrating Tasmin’s efforts this week as the Wānaka Sun has also been in touch with her.
Tasmin has been volunteering with M!nt Charitable Trust for the last two and a half years, starting as a 12 year old. Her work with M!nt can take up to four or five hours some weeks, but she loves it! Tasmin helps out weekly at Fit Collective with the gym classes, attends and helps out at music classes and teaches the United Dance Crew.
“At the moment with the United Dance Crew we are working on a dance for the Matariki celebrations at the lake front". She says that this, along with other performances like the Festival of Colour, is a real highlight for her. “It’s really cool to see the group perform after all of their hard work”.
As well as her term time activities, Tasmin also volunteers with M!nt during the holidays and attends the end of year overnight camps. Last year it was at Camp Columba and was the first time the group went away for a two night excursion.
When asked why Tasmin volunteers she said “I just enjoy it, and feel good after I do it”.
M!nt Charitable Trust works in supporting those in the Upper Clutha Area with intellectual disabilities to have a voice and be included in their community. They are an incredible group of young people with excellent leaders and volunteers. There are more volunteer roles available with M!nt which are advertised here on the Volunteer South website.
