MODEL UNITED NATIONS

Carly Green and Monique Kelly, both parents of students at MAC, are helping organise a Model United Nations Youth Summit in Wanaka on the Tuesday 22 September. This will be run in partnership with the Otago/Southland unit of UN Youth New Zealand and the region’s secondary schools. Both Carly and Monique have worked for a number of years with different UN organisations and would like to ensure students in our district have this opportunity. The benefits of these youth summits, both for student learning and future career paths, is exceptional.

The Model UN Summit is a fun and engaging workshop for high school students to explore the most pressing affairs for New Zealand and the international community. The day-long workshop aims to inspire our future leaders to engage in constructive, solution orientated debate, being considerate of the full range of community and global challenges. They will focus on a key issue on the day and deal with crisis response and resolution with the intent of building resilience and robust decision making practices.

We would like to invite students from Mount Aspiring College, Wakatipu High School, Cromwell College and Dunstan High School to this event. This is an opportunity for 10 to 15 students from Years 9 to 13 from each school to come along and work together on a specific topic. The number of students will be limited to 50 students total.

The Otago/Southland unit of the UN Youth New Zealand team has a health and safety plan for Level 2, which they can supply to the school. If we have to move to alert Level 3, the event will be switched to a webinar format.
