HOCKEY
In a highly completive game against Dunstan High School 1st XI, the Upper Clutha Hockey Club Senior Reserve Mixed High School team (all MAC students) dominated from the beginning of the game with Matt Botting scoring a fabulous goal after beating 3 players then the goalie within 4 minutes from the first whistle.
UCHC displayed wonderful team play with all players contributing to the team strategy laid out by coaches Sam Fitzgerald and James Leech. The continual pressure on attack resulted in a penalty corner awarded to UCHC from which James Dougherty controlled the ball well enabling Will Anderson to score. Great play through the midfield from Angus Ives and Beau Gordon with strong passes to the attacking circle resulted in a second goal from Matt Botting in the third quarter. Dunstan came back strong to score a goal in response to take the score to 3-1. With an injury to Matt Botting and the UCHC defence under constant pressure Dunstan levelled the score to 3-3 at full time. For the second year the final between UCHC and DHS was taken to shoot outs. Kalan Evans was amazing in his composure having only practiced shoot outs a few days before and playing in the goal for the first time in his hockey career, saving 3 attempts by DHS. Hudson Weathington and James Dougherty both scoring their shoot out attempts resulting in a 3-3, 2-0 win for UCHC.
The team has developed wonderfully together as a unit throughout the season and this was a well deserved win for high school hockey players who enjoy and respect each other and their coaches. To complete the season the team is competing at the South Island Secondary Schools tournament in Timaru, aiming for their third tournament win.
BASKETBALL
Our MAC Junior Boys A Basketball Team (Year 9/10) has been away this week , competing at the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Basketball Tournament in Dunedin. They competed alongside 56 teams from around the South Island in the four day tournament.
It was the first time that MAC has taken a team to the South Island Tournament and they finished 12th out of 20 teams in the Boys Open Grade. This was an absolutely awesome result. The boys played some outstanding basketball against some really strong teams and improved so much during the tournament. There were many great battles on the court and some very close games, including an absolute nail biter when John McGlashan made the winning shot with only 1.5 seconds to go in the game! The team represented MAC with pride and they should be so proud to have competed so well against teams that play much more basketball than we get in Wānaka.
Results
MAC 64 vs John McGlashan 70
MAC 45 vs Burnside High School 74
MAC 75 vs Taieri College 61
MAC 56 vs Ashburton College 67

A HUGE thank you must go to Beth Mackie (coach) and Corban Taylor (co-coach/manager/team Dad), for working so hard with this team and making this trip possible. Also to the Wānaka Basketball Club for sponsoring the team hoodies (they looked so smart!). It was the first time many of these students had competed at a multi-day tournament and we definitely want to make this fantastic tournament a regular event on the school calendar.
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
MAC Cross-Country Skiing Championships: A fun day was had in the sun at Snow Farm with over 70 students lined up at the start line to race across the snowy terrain, a 2 km course for the Year 7/8s and 3.5km for the Year 9-13s. Many of the students were part of the MAC Cross Country Skiing programme offered this term and the champs rounded out their 6 week course.
The championships, held Wednesday 31 August were a testament to both individual skill and house spirit. Students of all skill levels took to the trails with each house rallying their members to achieve their best.
Results:
Iron emerged as the champions this year, clinching first place.
Pisa came in second place.
Barker took third place, with only one point difference to Pisa.
Roy rounded out the top four.
