Touch

If you are in Year 9 or 10 and would like to play in a boys team in the upcoming Central Otago junior touch tournament in Cromwell on Tuesday 5 November, please contact Tiny Carruthers asap: tiny@sportsotago.co.nz.

Swimming

The NZ Short Course swimming championships were held in Auckland during the school holidays. MAC students Ben Silipo, Jack Findlay, Kate Bennie and Cruz Morland competed at the event with everyone achieving a top ten finish.

Ben Silipo did exceptional well coming away with two national titles and eight medals in total.

Ben won gold in the 400m individual medley and 1500m freestyle, silver in the 200m IM, 200 m breaststroke, 200m freestyle, 400 m freestyle, 200m butterfly and bronze in the 100m IM in the U14 boys age group. He bet his personal bests in all disciplines. Fantastic achievement!

Snow Sports

The Cardrona Alpine resort once again hosted the Snow Sports NZ junior nationals freestyle championships during the holidays. Disciplines included gravity X, slopestyle, halfpipe and big mountain/freeride for both skiers and snowboarders. Three MAC students came away with national titles:

Congratulations to

  • Fin Melville Ives, the U14 boys overall ski champion (1st ski cross, 9th freeride, 1st slopestyle, 1st halfpipe)

  • Sylvia Trotter, the U14 girls overall ski champion (1st ski cross, 2nd freeride big mountain, 1st slopestyle, 2nd halfpipe)

Cam Melville Ives, the U14 boys overall snowboard champion (4th snow cross, 2nd freeride, 1st slopestyle, 1st halfpipe)

FOOTBALL

Three MAC students, Head Boy Fletch Cavanagh and year 12 students Michael Gealogo and Weston Bell have recently been selected for the Southern United National Youth League football squad for the 2019/2020 season.

The National Youth league runs concurrently with the Senior national league and involves ten teams from around the country representing the best young talent under the age of 20.

All three boys were members of both the MAC First XI and the Wanaka AFC Senior Mens 1st XI this year and have undoubtedly benefited from regular game time playing a high level of football.

Ex-MAC students Rory Hannon and Adam Hewson have been previous members of the Southern Youth side but it is rare for students in year 12 to make it. It is a fantastic achievement and these boys are to be congratulated. They have completed three games so far starting with two losses but recently beat the Wellington Phoenix youth side 2-0 with Michael getting on the score sheet.
