TRIATHLON

CHALLENGE WANAKA SCHOOLS TRIATHLON EVENTS

Years 7 - 8: Upper Clutha Intermediate Schools triathlon champs

WHERE: Glendhu Bay, Lake Wanaka

WHEN: Thursday 18 February: briefing 9.00 am, race starts 9.30 am

WHAT: 200 metre swim, 6km cycle, 3km run

WHO: Individuals or teams of two or three

COST: $5pp

ENTRIES DUE: Thursday 11 February, 3.15pm (NO LATE ENTRIES ACCEPTED)

Challenge Wanaka Secondary Schools Triathlon

The Challenge Wanaka Secondary Schools Triathlon is also being held on Thursday 18 February.

Individuals and teams will swim, bike and run to complete the course. The Otago Secondary Schools Champions will also be crowned as a part of this event, with the results being separated out from the overall Secondary Schools Race.

Entry costs $12 per person for Otago Secondary Schools for individual or team ($24 for a team of two and $36 for a team of three.

This event is open to competitive athletes as well as HAVE-A-GO athletes, whether it is as a team or as an individual. Distances are a 300m swim, 10 km bike and 3.5km run for U14 and U16’s and a 300m swim, 15 km bike and 4 km run for U19’s.

Otago Secondary School Triathlon Champs

Athletes from schools within the OSSSA region will also be competing for the title of Otago Secondary Schools Champion. The results will be separated after the races and these titles along with the overall Challenge Wanaka winners will be presented at the prize giving following the race.

Homes Challenge Wanaka ADAPTIVE EVENT

WHEN: Thursday 13 February

AGE GRADES: This event will be open to anyone Under 25 with an impairment (either intellectual or physical)

CATEGORIES:

Physical:

Adaptive Physical A: Swim 25m in waist deep water, along the lake front + bike 1 lap (1km) + run to the finish line (approximately 100m)

Adaptive Physical B: Swim 50m + bike 1 lap (1km) + Run 1 lap

Adaptive Physical C: Swim 200m + bike 2 laps (2km) + run 2 laps

Intellectual:

Adaptive – Intellectual A: Swim 25m in waist deep water, along the lake front + bike 1 lap (1km) + run to the finish line (approximately 100m)

Adaptive Intellectual B: Swim 50m + bike 1 lap (1km) + run 1 lap

Adaptive Intellectual C: Swim 200m + bike 2 laps (2km) + run 2 laps

TIMETABLE:

11.15am – Meet in Bike Transition for race briefing

11.30am – Race Start down by the lakefront

CRICKET

Cricket Girls National Primary Schools Shield team- Year 7/8

Trials for the National Primary Schools Shield are being held on the MAC field on Tuesday 9 February at 3.30-4.30 pm. To register your interest in being a part of the team please sign up either in person at the SportsHub or via email by lunchtime Tuesday 9 February.

Cricket Boys National Primary Schools Cup team- Year 7/8

Trials for the National Primary Schools Cup are being held on the MAC field on Friday 12 February at lunch time. To register your interest in being a part of the team please sign up either in person at the SportsHub or via email by Thursday 11 February.

Year 9-13 Girls Cricket Team

There is a six-week girls cricket competition played on Wednesday nights starting in week 4 (24 February). Please email sports@mtaspiring.school.nz or come to the Sports Hub if you would like to be a part of the team!

Volleyball Senior Girls

Our performance senior girls volleyball team needs additional players to attend the South Island and Otago Secondary School tournaments in February and March. If you are interested please join practice next Tuesday 9 February at 5.00 pm at the MAC gym. Some experience is required. If you have further questions please contact the sports hub (sports@mtaspiring.school.nz).


MTB

Otago/Southland School MTB

Entries are still open for the Otago/Southland School MTB champs 2021.

The event will be held on Saturday and Sunday 20-21 February at Signal Hill in Dunedin.

No sign up at the Sports hub required

SISS MTB champs

Entries for the SISS MTB champs are open. The champs will be held from 12-14 March in Methven. Entries for all events are restricted. Schools will be limited to four riders each into the Downhill and Cross Country, and 6 riders into the Enduro.

All other riders must be entered onto the waiting list.

Entry fees are $35 for XC, $65 for DH and $45 for Enduro.

HOCKEY

This is the last week to register for our Social Summer Hockey which starts Wednesday 10 February and runs for 8 weeks. Cost is $20.

The mixed touch tournament is being held at the Wanaka Rugby Grounds on 28 February at 1.00 pm.

$10 per team, Years 5&6, 7&8, 9&10, minimum of two girls on at all times. Entries close 24 February.

SPORTS RESULTS

Athletics

The NZ Secondary Schools Track & Field Champs were held in Tauranga late last year. The MAC team consisted of Georgie Bruce, Millie East, Abby Fisher, Estelle Gellatly and Scarlett Norman and Niamh Townsend.

Abby Fisher won the bronze medal in the senior girls 200m.

Millie East, Abby Fisher, Georgie Bruce & Niamh Townsend won the silver medal in the senior girls 4x100m relay and Estelle Gellatly, Georgie Bruce, Millie East & Abby Fisher won the silver medal in the senior girls 4x400m relay.

Abby Fisher has now won a bronze medal in three consecutive secondary schools national championships and MAC relay teams have also won medals in both relay events in three consecutive national championships (silver and bronze in 2018, two golds in 2019 and two silvers in 2020).

ROWING

Over the weekend several MAC students attended the South Island Rowing Championship Regatta held in Twizel. The racing conditions were perfect and the MAC rowers showed some outstanding performances.

1st place - U17 girl’s quad: Neve Faed, Emily Findlay, Bella Sarginson, Samara Goodall and coxswain Thomas Mitchell

1st place - Intermediate coxed quad: Neve Faed, Lyla Chamberlain, Bella Sarginson and Samara Goodall with coxswain Thomas Mitchell

1st place - Men’s intermediate single sculls: Aaron Maxwell

2nd place - U19 girl’s quad: Pipi Horan, Emily Findlay, Lyla Chamberlain, Neve Faed and coxswain Thomas Mitchell

2nd place - U16 girl’s double: Pipi Horan and Ruby Boyd

Well done everyone, fantastic results!

Big congratulations to MAC teacher and rowing coach Rachel O'Connell who had a confident win in her woman’s masters single, Rachel then joined Matt Rickard to win the mixed masters double with a cruise over the finish line first.
