AIMS Games
The AIMS Games are a sporting championship that provides Year 7 and 8 students with an opportunity to compete as an individual or as part of a team at a competition featuring 23 different sports. The event brings together more than 10,000 competitors from more than 320 schools and this year’s event was held at Tauranga earlier this month.
A number of our MAC students competed at the games: Skyla Coll and Piper Wolf competed in trampolining and double mini tramp. Agnes Karlsson competed in gymnastics. Elsie Parsons, Lucy Wellington, Amelia Knight, Vienna Harley and Charlie Nisbet all competed in gymnastics, trampoline, double mini-tramp and tumbling.
Congratulations to our students who achieved their personal bests and to Charlie Nisbet who achieved third place overall in gymnastics, second place in tumbling and third place in trampolining.
Koru Games
Last week the Year 8A Netball team travelled to Christchurch to compete in the South Island Koru Games. Over 2,800 Year 7 and 8's from 61 schools came from all over the South Island to compete in 16 sports. The netball competition was a tough one with 32 teams, and three games to be played each day for three days. However, the MAC girls took it in their stride and played some amazing netball.
With five wins and only one fiercely fought narrow loss by three points to Ashburton (the eventual winners of the competition) in pool play, we ended up in the quarter finals against a really skilled Rakaia team. Rakaia had three boys in their team which was amazing to watch, but it was also a huge challenge to us as they played a very different style of netball to what we were used to and the boys could all jump so high! Our team played the game of their lives - shutting down their flow through the court and with outstanding defence we managed to keep the score even throughout most of the game. Unfortunately, we just couldn’t quite hold on and we lost by two points at full time - such a great effort though! This put us into the playoffs for 5th-8th place and we finished off the tournament strongly with a convincing 5th place - which we are so proud of.
It was the first time MAC has ever taken a team to the Koru Games and what an awesome experience it was. The whole week was outstanding - the 'inclusivity' ethos of the tournament, the new friends made, and the skills gained will stay with them a lifetime. Finally a huge thank you to our fabulous coaches Megan Beale and Claire Radford, our lovely team umpire SK Dineen and our unbelievably organised team manager Jules Hunt - without you all, this would not have been possible.
