SWIMMING
The Otago Short Course Swimming Championships were held at Moana Pool in Dunedin last weekend. A number of our students competed in this event, but there are two students who had standout performances in particular. Two Otago records were broken over the course of the weekend - both broken by our students.
Hana Carnie broke the Female 12 Years 100m Individual Medley Otago Record with a time of 1:11.58. Hana took 100th of a second off the previous mark, which was set by Clara Peniamina in 2019. Hana rounds out the 2023/24 season with eighteen new Otago Age Group records under her belt - an amazing achievement.
Sophia McClintock also had a successful championship, earning her first Otago record. Sophia smashed the Otago record in the Female 12 Years 50m Butterfly, touching in 30.92 to become the youngest female swimmer in Otago to break the 31 second barrier in the event. In doing so, Sophia took down Aleisha Ruske’s record from 14 years ago – set in 2010.
Congratulations, Hana and Sophia. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for you!
NETBALL
On 9 and 10 July, the Year 9A and 10A Netball teams competed in the Otago Secondary School Netball tournament (OSS) held at the Dunedin Edgar Centre. This was the first tournament for the teams with the South Island Secondary Schools tournament (SISS) coming up the first week of the holidays.
Year 9A Team
The Year 9A team has been training twice a week since the start of Term 2. They play the 10A team weekly at practice. The team is ranking high in their grade in the Year 9-10 School Competition on a Saturday with a recent game against the Year 9A Wakatipu team with a large win margin.
At the tournament students had four games.
Game 1: vs St Hilda’s - neck and neck for the first three quarters but lost 20 to 14
Game 2: vs Otago Girls - came out firing, up every quarter and won 24 to 10
Game 3: Semi vs Waitaki Girls High School: close game but came out on top 13-15
Game 4: Final for 5/6 vs South Otago High School: great game though losing 15-21
Finishing 6th place.
Thanks to Lisa Gemmel and Hannah Bendle for coaching the team and Charlotte Jackson for managing. They have been encouraging the team and preparing us well to improve and gel as a team throughout the season.
Year 10A Team
The Year 10A team have been training hard since the beginning of Term 2 as well as playing in the Senior Grade against adults in the Thursday evening competition and the Year 9-10 School Competition on a Saturday. Students in the teams also contribute to reffing or coaching on a Friday evening.
At the tournament the team had four games.
Game 1: vs Taieri - a strong win each quarter with a result of 23 to 8
Game 2: vs St Kevin’s - a close game, gaining at the end but a loss of 29 to 25
Game 3: Semi vs South Otago High School: tight game losing 20 -25
Game 4: Final for 7/8 vs Columba: another tough loss 19-28
Finishing 8th place.
Thanks to Maree Lange for her energy, enthusiasm and knowledge for the game. She has tirelessly worked with the students to bring the team together and improve the skill level of all students.
Report by Liz McHugh, Manager of the Year 10A Team.
SQUASH
Last weekend, five MAC students headed to Dunedin to compete in the South Island Secondary School Squash Championships.
Two teams were entered in the competition:
MAC A - Ethan Prince, Oisin Corbett, Kyan Prince
MAC B - Rui Fukaya & Cody Armstrong
23 school teams were entered in the competition and our teams were really competitive.
The MAC A team competed in a tough Division A. They had close losses against Christchurch Boys High School (1), Marlborough Boys (Gold) and St Bedes (Red) and finished in fourth place overall for the South Island.
The MAC B team competed in Division C. They had two close losses against Christchurch Boys High School teams 3 and 4, and a strong win against St Bedes (Black). They finished third in Division 3.
The team really enjoyed this event and it was a great stepping stone in their preparation for the upcoming New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Championships, which are being held in Wellington from the 2-4 August.

Good luck to Raph Anderson who is heading off to America on 4 July to compete in two tournaments which he qualified for last year. He is competing in the 13-14 age group in both tournaments.

A huge thanks to our rugby team managers Sally, Hayley, Leeann and Richard who supported the fundraiser which raised just shy of $3000 (which will be used towards the purchase of gear for the 2024/25 season). Special mention to Marc Ellis and the Highlanders team who kindly donated the jersey to the school for this purpose and our large number of MAC rugby whānau who supported the fundraiser by purchasing raffle tickets.

Noosa High School U15 vs MAC U15
A Trans-Tasman rivalry match took place during lunchtime on Tuesday here at MAC between a visiting Australian team and our MAC U15 tournament team. A tough tussle was had which resulted in a win to our visitors 66-19. Huge thanks to the many staff and rugby whānau who supported this initiative - however, a special mention to our senior rugby players, along with Di Roy, Hamish Crosbie, Raihania Chadwick, Candace Carroll and our U15 coaches Luke Kelly and Justin Carnie, for all their hard work behind the scenes for many weeks now.
MAC Rugby Match Reports
Special thanks to our Roy House Junior Dean and photographer, Gareth Hodges who supports our teams with an endless supply of fantastic images most weekends.
MAC Girls First XV
For the final game in the round, MAC played Cromwell College 10s due to unavailable players from both teams. We had such an excellent game and we were all super proud of the results. Although it was a loss (we received a hiding last time) we were stoked with only losing by 5. The overall score was 38-33. Our defence was phenomenal considering the large ground we had to cover. We utilised the space well on offence and our kicker, Caoimhe Heath, kicked 4/5 conversions. The tries were scored by Kiana Babbington (1), Piper Wolfe (1) and myself (3). Player of the day was received by Annie Wells and myself. Annie had such a strong, consistent game. As always thanks to coaches, sponsors and supporters. We are yet to confirm who and where we will play next week.
Kate Watson, Captain Girls 1st XV.
MAC Boys Seniors
Last week's game for the seniors was against John McGlashan 3rd XV. The final score of the game was 17-28 to JMC. So another disappointing loss, however it was still an exciting match to play in. In the first half we managed to score two tries. One try to Lucas Haig and another to Riley Upfold. However JMC managed to score the three tries which meant they had a lead of 14-10 coming into the second half. Again this weekend we had no subs, so it proved difficult to maintain the level of intensity into the second half. After a struggle between both teams for 20 minutes of no scoring, JMC managed to score first, making the score 21-10, and another try scored by Lucas Haig, making the score 21-17. JMC was able to score one more try to seal the win. Overall it was a good game from the MAC players and we gave it our very best effort even when there are factors against us. In supporting this week's game for us, I would like to thank Aaron Callaghan, our coaches Lincoln and Julian, our manager Hayley, and the TIC’s of MAC Rugby, for making this season a good one despite the results. I would also like to thank all of the supporters who showed up on the day to cheer for the school.
Jack Sides, Captain, MAC Seniors
MAC Boys First XV
On Saturday the First XV travelled down to Outram to play Taieri College. Although coming into this game as big favourites our mindset was still very much in the frame that this was going to be a challenging game. MAC started well with an early try to Tom Sides off a line break approximately 60 m out, leaving chasers and very chirpy opposition. Their full back was unsuccessful with their defensive efforts giving MAC a try under the posts, 7-0. This was followed by a try to Jackson Clark, who ran down the left hand blindside to score in the corner with an incredible dive having fended off at least three opposition players. The sideline conversion was unsuccessful leaving the score at 12-0. Taieri managed to apply some pressure early, however strong defence from Jonty Keenan, Flynn Phillips and others forced them to make mistakes any time they were in a good position. Charlie Roy scored near the end of the first half, with a darting run from half back down the blind side touchline, to score in similar fashion to Jackson. The conversion successfully made it 19-3 going into half time, suffering a penalty kick from Taieri. The second half saw two tries to winger Kahlarni Hondelink, one coming off a perfectly executed backline move where he ran straight into a gap off an inside ball, and another where he scooped up a messy Taieri ball off a line out overthrow to run 80m and score in the corner. Both conversions went over making the score 33-3 going into the last 10 minutes of the game. It was a really scrappy end to the game, but overall a solid win from our boys but certainly some things to work on as always. Thanks to our van drivers Richard Sides and Sally and Todd Soper, as well as our coaches Wayne Enoka and Jason Clarke, manager Sally Soper (again) and TICs. Thanks to our sponsors.
