TOUCH RUGBY

The senior Touch Rugby team has been training hard for tournaments at the end of summer. Last Friday night they took part in a Central Otago tournament as a warm up for the Otago Secondary schools competition next weekend. Despite the high temperature in Cromwell, the MAC team used the tournament as a great training run to put set plays into practice and try out different combinations. Although some brilliant tries were scored the opposition picked a few holes in the defence, giving the team a few things to work on ahead of the next competition.

In the afternoon, 70 senior students hit the course competing in the U14, U16 and U19 categories. This triathlon encompasses two events in one race, with students competing in both the Challenge Wānaka Triathlon and also, for the students from Otago, the Otago Secondary School Triathlon Championships. Our students’ attitude and sportspersonship were outstanding, both on and off the course. A huge effort from all of our students led to many podium finishes and MAC retained its crown as the ‘Top Performing School at the Challenge Wānaka Secondary School Event’ winning the Bill Godsall Trophy for the second year running.

We had a fantastic group of new year 13 hostel students who competed in the Challenge events - what a great introduction to Wānaka! — Image by: Mount Aspiring College

On Saturday, a team of four Year 13 students took part in the Integrity Homes Challenge Wānaka Half Ironman. The event was a 1.9km swim (Josh Moody), a 90km bike (Tom Sides and Hugo Sinclair) and 21.1km run (Zavier Taylor and Josh Moody). They each put in a strong performance and took out the ‘school team’ category in a time of 4 hours and 40 minutes. They also finished a very impressive fifth place overall, out of 115 teams.

Special mention goes to Josh Moody whose swim and run were exceptional. He completed the swim in 25:05 minutes and was the second team swimmer out of the water (his time would have put him in 8th place in the pro race). For his run at the end of the team event, Josh ran an impressive sub 40 minute 10km, with Josh and Zavier together completing the third fastest run of all teams.

Congratulations everyone on an awesome effort from all of our students involved in this fantastic local event.

GOLF

On Monday, 18 students headed to Cromwell to compete in the inaugural Central Otago Secondary Schools Golf Tournament. They completed the course in teams of three, with three of our Year 9 students competing in the 18-hole competitive competition, while the rest competed in the 9-hole ambrose competition. The students had a great day out on the course and they really enjoyed this new event. Many thanks to Tiffany Kemp, Ignacio Sande and Alison Wright for accompanying the teams to the tournament.
