MAC ADVENTURE RACE CHAMPIONSHIPS
In October MAC will run its first Adventure Race Championships. This is a great opportunity for all of our students to experience adventure racing in a fun format in their own backyard.
The event runs for three hours for Years 7 to 9 students and six hours for students in Years 10 to 13 and involves three disciplines: foot (walk or run), bike and paddle. In Term 3 we will offer training and learning opportunities in preparation for the race.
So gather your team and register! If you can’t find a team, please register as an individual and our sports department will help find you a team.
For more information and to register please see this link: MAC Adventure Race Champs
We want to thank Mark Watson, Adam Fairmaid, and Bob and Cat McLachlan for helping to develop this fun event and for volunteering to share their amazing knowledge and experience with us - we are so lucky!
SPORTS RESULTS
BASKETBALL
Basketball is currently the fastest growing sport in New Zealand and here in Wānaka we have definitely caught basketball fever too! This year, Mount Aspiring College has had five senior teams and four junior teams competing in our local Central Otago Secondary Schools competition. With the support of the Aspiring Basketball Academy and the Wānaka Basketball Club, we are working hard to develop the support we need to continue to grow our numbers and participation in these competitions, including increasing our volunteer coach and referee numbers.
As our students develop their skills and their love of the sport, they start to look for opportunities to play more regularly. Due to our geographical location, this often means that travel is required. Last term, Mount Aspiring College had a strong contingent of players who headed to Dunedin to play in trials for the Otago under 13 basketball teams. We are really proud to announce that five of our Years 7 and 8 students have been selected to represent Otago this season: Axel Worthington, Dan Kettle, Deacon Gwilliam Browne, Trinity Pullar and Holly Radford. They will continue to travel weekly to Dunedin for the rest of the term for training and will compete in three tournaments over the season, culminating in the prestigious Southern Regionals in Ashburton in October. We have also had two other Mount Aspiring College students representing Otago in basketball this year: Georgia Beale U15 Girls and Kate Watson U17 Girls.
GOLF
Congratulations to Year 8 MAC student Raphael (Raph) Anderson who finished in 10th position at the US Kids’ Golf World Championships in Las Vegas in June.
During the three-day tournament Raph shot rounds of 76, 77, and 76 to finish +13. Raph is planning to compete in the New Zealand Junior Open in October, and as the Wānaka Golf Club’s Junior A open age group champion, he will also compete at the Otago Champion of Champions event this month.
Raph has also gained entry into the World Stars Junior Championship and has qualified to play at the New Zealand U16 Championships later this month where he will be the youngest competitor in the field. Congratulations Raph on these amazing achievements!
