Swimming

The National Age Group Championships were held in Wellington from 19 to 24 April, with Wanaka Swim Club and Mount Aspiring College students Benjamin Silipo and William Schurink competing.

This is the premier National competition for swimmers aged 13-18 in New Zealand and is a tough event just to qualify for with fewer than 30 swimmers from all of Otago eligible to compete.

Ben followed up his excellent results at the New Zealand Open Championships with another great meet, finishing with two silver medals in the 400 IM and 400 Freestyle. The order of events made it difficult for Ben to compete in all of his best events meaning he didn't swim the distance freestyle events - races he could have also been a medal contender in. Ben also had a 4th place in the 200 IM, 6th in the 200 backstroke, and 9th in the 200 breaststroke to complete a great week for him.

William was competing in his first National Age Groups and had a great meet swimming personal best times in all events and qualifying for the final in the 200 backstroke where he finished in 7th place. He also finished 13th and 17th in the 100 backstroke and 50 backstroke respectively. This will no doubt be the first of many of these competitions for William as he continues to improve.

The team now have a well deserved break before heading into the short course (25m pool) season with Otago, South Island, and National events on the calendar for July and August.

Golf

MAC student Raphael Anderson (Year 7) recently competed in the Otago Age Group Golf Championships. Faced with heavy rain and wind, Raphael navigated the Taieri Lakes Golf Course to shoot a 14 over par 86 to win the Otago Age Group Championship for the U13 grade. The annual tournament was held during the school holidays and was the pinnacle tournament for this season with new goals now being set for later in the year and 2023. Congratulations and well done Raphael!
