From your previous BOT rep, Isobel Smith:

'It’s been an absolute privilege to be your BoT Rep for 2020, however my time on the board is almost over. While I’m sad to be going, I’m excited to see a new person with new ideas join the board. The past year in this role has been a truly valuable experience learning about governance, professionalism and more. Nominations are open until Wednesday 26 August for anyone in year 9 or above and I encourage anyone who might be interested to start thinking now! If you have any questions come chat to me around school. Thanks, Isobel'

UPDATE FROM MADELEINE

Tēnā koutou whanau, parents and caregivers,

I thought it would be timely to update you on the next steps regarding the recruitment of the new principal and time frames. I am currently utilising the information I gained in my consultation on the principal role, to assist me in formulating the position description and specifically the person specification for the role.

I will be putting together an application pack and looking to go to market with the role at the end of this month. We will be advertising nationally and overseas, through a number of different channels, and will be looking to make an appointment to start in Term 1, 2021. I will keep you appropriately updated on our process.

Now that I have finished my scoping I thought it would be beneficial to explain in more detail how I work with the acting principal and the board.

So, I am Limited Statutory Manager (Employment and Communications) and I also have the powers to advise the Board on policies and procedures. This means I have taken over the governance function of employment and communications from the Board. I am not however a member of the Board. I can attend the Board meeting and have speaking rights at the Boards invitation. I am also independent of the Ministry of Education. I don’t hold any powers of finance, so I need to get approval from the Board for any spend.

In the governance role of employment I am the employer at the school. In this role I am the employer of the principal who I support and hold to account. The principal has delegated responsibility to be the employer of all of the staff at the school.

I hold the governance function of communications at the school. This mainly involves dealing with the media and also overseeing communications strategy for the school. I can’t speak on behalf of the Board. I work closely with the Board so we are on the same page as far as strategic communications and messaging goes.

My style is to work alongside the Board and Principal in a constructive, consultative and collaborative manner in order to get the best outcomes for the school. I am looking forward to working with Dr Ian Hall as chair and I would like to thank Ed Nepia for his work in the role.

Finally, just a reminder that now that my scoping is complete, if staff or parents contact me directly wanting to discuss any matters, I will need to direct them to the appropriate process or person to talk too. My role is a governance role and it is important that I respect and maintain the governance/management divide.

Kind regards,

Madeleine Hawkesby

Limited Statutory Manager
