SPORTS NOTICES
ADVENTURE RACING
In October MAC will run its first Adventure Race Championships. This is a great opportunity for all of our students to experience adventure racing in a fun format in their own backyard.
The event runs for three hours for Years 7 to 9 students and six hours for students in Years 10 to 13 and involves three disciplines: foot (walk or run), bike and paddle. In Term 3 we will offer training and learning opportunities in preparation for the race.
So gather your team and register! If you can’t find a team, please register as an individual and our sports department will help find you a team.
For more information and to register please see this link: MAC Adventure Race Champs
We want to thank Mark Watson, Adam Fairmaid, and Bob and Cat McLachlan for helping to develop this fun event and for volunteering to share their amazing knowledge and experience with us - we are so lucky!
SPORTS RESULTS
CROSS COUNTRY
Congratulations to Josh Moody (Year 12) who competed in the Otago Secondary Schools Cross Country Running Championships earlier in the month. He raced against tough competition on a “brutal” 6km course in the U19 Category and finished up in 3rd place. A huge effort! Congratulations Josh.
NETBALL
Last weekend four Mt Aspiring College netball teams headed to Dunedin to compete in the Otago Secondary Schools Netball tournament. Fifty-six teams took part in the two day tournament, which acts as a great build up for the upcoming South Island Secondary School tournaments which our A, 10A and 9A netball teams will compete in, and it is also the main tournament of the year for our school B team. The teams played some amazing netball, working hard to achieve some fantastic results. Well done girls - we’re really proud of you all!
Results:
9A - 4th place
10A - 2nd place
B team - 3rd place
A team - 7th place

Ist XV
Last weekend we finished the first round of the competition with a trip to Milton to take on the South Otago 1st XV. In cold and foggy conditions, the team started strong and defended well for the first 10 minutes before a skilful cross kick saw South Otago open the scoring. We responded with overwhelming possession and marched our way down the field to pressure the South Otago line for the majority of the rest of the first half, finally getting rewarded with an excellent pass from Jonty Keenan to his fellow prop Ryan Enoka to crash over in the corner. We ended the half down 7-5.
The second half started with South Otago on the front foot when our discipline started to let us down. A quick penalty stretched the South Otago lead to 10-5. Then excellent defensive pressure and dominant tackling from the MAC midfield led to Jackson Clarke pressuring a kick and charging it down before recovering the ball and scoring. Tom Sides converted to give us the lead 12-10.
Throughout the rest of the game, our discipline in defence and our support play let us down and stopped us getting ourselves out of trouble. Although we tackled well, our own errors kept gifting South Otago field position and possession. South Otago managed to convert that pressure into points, with two tries to stretch out to the 24-12 final score.
As a team we have improved significantly in our defence from our last couple of performances, which is encouraging as we move into the second round. It will be up to us to find ways to take our improvements and turn them into wins as we have the return games against our opponents in the second round. We start with a home game against Dunstan this Saturday, so come down and show your support! Written by Gareth Howley
The home game this weekend at MAC kicks off at 12.45pm.
