SUSTAINABILITY

Wastebusters held an event at MAC to raise awareness of textile waste and to promote the buying of second-hand clothes.

To mark ‘slow fashion month’ this March, Wastebusters recently held an event at MAC to raise awareness of textile waste and to promote the buying of second-hand clothes.

Slow fashion is the alternative to fast fashion that promotes the re-use of second-hand clothing, rather than the buying and disposing of fashion at an unsustainable rate, and is also a good example of the MAC value of kaitiakitanga (protecting and looking after the environment) in action.

At the event, students from all year levels had an opportunity to watch a fast-fashion themed film, participate in a discussion about young people’s ideas and motivations in relation to fashion and the reduction of textile waste, and play some games, including dressing mannequins in re-used clothing from Wastebusters.

Student discount!

This month, Wastebusters is offering a 25% discount for students when they buy re-used clothing and shoes at Wasties - just let the shop staff know you are a student when making a purchase.

Refashion show: 21 March

MAC students are warmly invited to attend the Wastebusters alternative Refashion Show on 21 March at the Lake Wānaka Centre. Tickets for students are $10. Just enter STUDENT24 in the discount code field when buying a ticket: https://events.humanitix.com/refashion

Thank you to Wānaka Wastebusters for running the event at MAC and for raising awareness of textile waste and the benefits of buying second-hand clothes. Thanks also to Emily McRae and our drama department for the use of the MAC theatre for the event.
