Alastair Sinton - Principal —

E ngā reo, e ngā waka, e ngā mana, tēnā koutou katoa.

One of our key touchstones and the theme for this term is Character.

Deputy Principal Mr van der Beek and I spoke to assemblies in the first few weeks about character, perhaps trying to quantify the intangible. A person's character is not something that is easy to define. Equally, we are hard-pressed to find universal agreement on what would be the most desirable character traits. That said, we both felt there is value in sharing our appreciation and admiration for people who do the 'right thing' even when no-one is watching or when there is no direct personal benefit for the person doing the 'right thing'.

It was with satisfaction then that at senior assemblies last week, two Year 12 students Marijke Hattingh and Brylee Comer shared their thoughts, experience and advice on an effective study process as seniors head into examinations. Here are just a few great suggestions they made;

- Set small, achievable goals
- Prepare and eat well
- Isolate distractions (phones)
- Teach others
- Look after yourself, get some exercise

It was great to see these students epitomise Character in such a giving and courageous way. The upcoming examinations are significant as they give teachers, students and family and early indication of likely success at the end of the year. They also provide the school with evidence to support a derived grade should your child need it at the end of the year. As always, if you feel your child is struggling or need of extra assistance, please do not hesitate to contact the appropriate staff to see what support may be available.

Lastly, our annual exchange with Lynfield College is still a much-anticipated feature of the calendar. The exchange has been a part of our heritage since our founding 60 years ago. This year we were once again victorious, winning the day 7 - 5. Well done to all involved.
