Kia ora tātou e te whānau,

I am sure the move to Alert Level One has been welcomed by all. It has been great to get along and watch our hockey finals and host our annual Lipsync competition this week. While the change of Alert Level has us returning to a more familiar pattern, I would like to emphasise the importance of key messages such as good hygiene and keeping your child at home if they are unwell.

Next term is a time for celebration as we recognise the fantastic work of our students in our prizegivings and graduations, but it is also a time where our students need to focus on their studies and make sure their goals for next year become reality. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s progress, do not hesitate to get in touch with the Year Level Dean.

I hope our students have a productive break over the next two weeks and look forward to finishing the year successfully.

Design Learning Evening

It was fantastic to see so many parents of our Design Learning students last Wednesday for our Learning Celebration Evening. New Zealand’s education system is still very results-driven and while we all strive for high achievement, we must always remind ourselves of the importance of the learning that generates the end result. On display was a huge variety of projects and, through the exhibition of these projects, students had to clearly articulate the deep learning they engaged with.

Thanks to all of those who came along to support our learners, and to staff and students for their hard work and energy.

Lisa Morressey

I would like to acknowledge Lisa Morressey who is finishing this week as Principal at Mount Maunganui Intermediate. Lisa has been a tireless servant of the Mount Maunganui community and has been instrumental in elevating the standard of education in the area. More recently, in her co-leadership role of the Mount Maunganui Kāhui Ako, Lisa has galvanised local schools and iwi into a coherent group; the benefits of which will resonate through our community for many, many years. Mount Maunganui College wishes Lisa well as she takes her significant experience further down the coastal strip to her new role as Principal of Papamoa Primary School.

Dance NZ Made

A number of our hardworking dance students headed to Palmerston North over the weekend to participate in the Dance NZ Made National Finals. Performing at the Regent on Broadway is an experience in itself and our students put on a number of stunning routines.

Congratulations to Ella Radovanovich, Lyla Radich and Baylee Murray for coming 2nd in the Trios. Lyla also came 2nd in the solo performances and took out the overall Art of Movement Award.

Lipsync

Always a highlight of the school calendar, this year’s Lipsync was no exception. A lot of fun was had by both the performers and the audience with many hidden talents exposed! Well done to Courtney and Jaxin for hosting the evening.

Sports wrap up - Thank you

In spite of the challenges our 2020 winter sports programme has had another fantastic year across many different sporting codes. Check the latest from our Dan Meade our Director of Sport in this newsletter.

I would like to acknowledge all our volunteers who give so much of their time, care and energy so our students can stay active, engaged and fulfil their potential. With the huge number of sports teams and a wide range of activities Mount Maunganui College has to offer, we rely heavily on our community for support. Thank you for all that you do.

Noho ora mai,
