2019 International Service Trip to Tonga

Claire Fuller (HOD Home Economics) —

We have spaces available for students to join Mount Maunganui College and Volunteer Build in Tonga to give back to the community by building a new home to replace homes destroyed by recent cyclones.

The trip is from 31 August 2019 to 10 September 2019 and will be a mixture of male / female students and Mount Maunganui College supervising teachers. Volunteer Build will provide a host and two building foremen to oversee the project.

Our students will be part of the Mount Maunganui College project working with a local business, Heilala Vanilla, who currently process and grow vanilla on Eua Island, Tonga.

In the recent cyclone back in March 2018 employees who work for Heilala had houses destroyed and have no way or no money to rebuild them – one family is currently living in a pig sty with 11 kids; another in a shanty on a hill that flooded with mud and water when it rained with 10 kids – they also have a Red Cross tent and someone sleeping in a wrecked car. As a school we feel all are worthwhile projects that will make a huge difference to their lives.

The cost of the trip is approximately $4,000 per student.  A $250 deposit is required to secure a place.  Fundraising activities will be put in place to help each student subsidise their costs.

A meeting will be organised for next term to answer any questions.
