Complete Sports Awards Results and General Update - 23 October 2020

Dan Meade —

Sports Awards

Sports Awards were held last night, Wednesday 21 October in the school hall. It was great to see our wonderful high achievers in sport recognised for their hard work and dedication.

Guest speaker, Lizzy Igasan Horlock, spoke about her journey in hockey. Her messages of growth not being a straight line, taking every opportunity to grow, relying on the support and aroha of your village and soaking up the ‘sweet spots’ that sport provides resonated well with our young athletes sitting in the crowd.

Congratulations to all award winners and finalists. For a full list of award winners, please click here

Rugby League

Congratulations to Year 13 student, Rawiri Mathews, who has been selected for the New Zealand 18s Schools vs. New Zealand 18s Club fixture.

NZRL Schools and NZRL Clubs teams are set to face each other in the inaugural NZRL Schools v Clubs match on November 8th at Mt Smart Stadium.

The NZRL Schools v Clubs match is the first of its kind and will act as a key development pathway for New Zealand 18 players. For 2020, the New Zealand Schools team comprises of identified players from the Auckland Rugby League Secondary Schools competition as well as those registered in full-time study.

The New Zealand Clubs team consists of identified players who have competed in regional tournaments or a meaningful club competition in 2020. Both the New Zealand Schools and Clubs teams will assemble on Thursday 5 November in Auckland, with a short camp ahead of their fixture against New Zealand Clubs on Sunday 8 November.

This year Rawiri has represented The Whalers Senior Men’s Team and the WaiCoaBay Senior Men’s Team and we wish him the best of luck on his journey.

NZ Secondary School Swimming Championships

The school swim team made up of Molly Shivnan, Zyleika Pratt-Smith, Lily Cooney, Kasha Stokes, Talitha McEwen and Monique Bartlett recently competed at the New Zealand Secondary School Championships in Hamilton.

The team gained a number of top 10 placings as well as seven bronze medals, twelve silver medals and eleven gold medals across the various age groups.

They picked up Bronze in the 4 x 50M Medley relay, silver in the 2 x 50M Free relay, gold in the 4 x 50M Free and gold in the 4 x 100M Free relays.

Out of 130 schools, and with six swimmers competing, Mount Maunganui College was named second overall school behind Rangitoto College who had a team of 24.

Thank you to team managers Sarah Shivnan and Annick Pratt who kept the school updated on the exciting results as they unfolded throughout the competition and took great care of the girls throughout the week.

The determination and commitment shown by this small team of girls is outstanding.

Congratulations on a remarkable achievement.

3x3 Basketball

Year 12 student, Melika Samia, has been selected as one of four players to represent New Zealand at the Schick 3X3 Cup. Under the watchful eye of National 3X3 Head Coach, Justine Reed, the quartet will wear the black and white colours of the NZ Select team.

Melika is one of two 17 year olds named playing with older players in an open womens’ team.
