A diary snapshot of camping at Omaka 2018

Day 1

The bus came to a stop as we pulled up outside Omaka Scout Camp and there was the usual kerfuffle as everyone grabbed their bags and lugged them toward the camp. We then sorted out tents and cooking stations and gathered in our activity groups. The first thing that my group did was the obstacle course which included a series of challenges like climbing over and under tyres and along wood planks. We then continued on and did about 5 other activities including putting up a tent blindfolded, blind trail, make a catapult & then catch marshmallows in a bucket, plus many others. We arrived back at camp and started getting ready for the master chief.

Ready set cook! The master chef was underway. Everybody frantically started cooking. We had an hour to complete our dishes. The end result of the masterchef was pretty impressive with all teams but one completing their dish in time. The winners of the master chef were a group who made salmon and quinoa. We then played spotlight which was the highlight of the day for many people. We played 3 rounds and all the teachers joined in. It had been a great first day and I was really looking forward to tomorrow.

Day 2

After we prepared and ate our breakfast, we all walked down to the Groynes for orienteering. We all gathered around and were given our maps and boundaries. As soon as we were released, we all rushed away and ran to the first marker. All the groups walked around collecting each letter off each marker. We were surrounded with beautiful nature and birds chirping. Once orienteering was over, we went back to the campsite, prepared and ate lunch, and then got ready for sailing. It was a short walk, not far from Omaka Scout Camp. We arrived at Lake Rua, and got taught everything about sailing. We all had a turn on the sailing boats, improving each time. It was a great experience.

Day 3

I wasn’t really that enthusiastic about day three as it meant packing up. I reluctantly dragged myself out of bed and got up for breakfast. We spent the rest of the morning packing up and by lunchtime we had finished. Thankfully the teachers and the parents made us lunch. We then got on the bus for the half hour drive back to school. We arrived back at school at about 1:30 and we hauled all the bags off the bus. We then did the auction in which Mrs Vesper (the auctioneer) sold us ice cream boxes which held prizes and duds. We brought them using the monkey money which we had earned on camp. I think that everybody had a great time on the T@TT camp.
