Sports Coordinator Report May 2022

Jackie Ryder —

Hi everyone, welcome to my third report for the 2022 year. Many thanks to everyone for their patience as we negotiate these very different times. Please rest assured we are doing our very best to give all our students as many opportunities to get out and do the sports they love as much as possible. Here is a little break down of where we are with our winter and summer sports now...

Badminton: (School person in charge of Badminton this year is Mr McKenzie) With the change to the orange setting, SC Badminton decided they had better organise something for the students of South Canterbury.  We have approximately 18 Girls (Junior and Senior) and 13 Boys (Junior and Senior) playing this year. They enjoyed their first night of competition play on Tuesday 17th May.

Basketball: (School person in charge of Basketball Boys is Mr McFarlane and for the Girls is Miss Hamilton) The first night of Basketball games was Friday the 6th May 2022. We have 2 x Junior Boy’s, 2 x Senior Boy’s, 1 x Junior Girls and 1 x Senior Girls teams competing this season. Our Junior and Senior A Boy’s teams are in the A grades and all other teams are in the B grades. Many thanks to all the whānau members who have stepped up to help with coaching and/or managing our teams. If you have a student that is playing Basketball, please make sure you are a member of the 'Mountainview Basketball Timaru' group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1475787869391009

Hockey: (School person in charge of Hockey is Miss Millar with help from Mrs Stevens, many thanks to these lovely ladies for taking on our wonderful Hockey students)  We have 13 awesome girls and boys playing hockey this year. The team is coached by Jozef Swallow (Year 12 student) who is also playing in the team, and Team Manager is Mrs Inke Swallow. The team has had a couple of games so far, even getting absolutely soaked in the pouring rain two weeks ago. Our team has a lot of young and first-time players in it but seem to be having fun as they are learning.

Football: (School person in charge of Football is Mr Duncan) Our Girls team has 14-15 players and have now had a couple of weeks of play in their local Aoraki Secondary Schools Competition, Thursday's after school.

Our boys’ team is playing in the local Aoraki Secondary Schools Wednesday after school competition, and on a Saturday Morning in the Football South competition. We also have a Mountainview High School Football and Futsal page which you can like: https://www.facebook.com/MVHSFootball

Netball: (School person in charge of Netball is Whaea Iri) We have three teams this year, A, B and Puma’s. All three teams have quite large numbers, this was done for two reasons, 1 - The price to NSC has risen again and to keep the prices down, we have more in a team and 2 - Because of Covid, we have no idea when or if any number of students will be home sick or isolating with this horrid thing. Netball has also had a bumpy start, but with the amazing help of our wonderful Mountie staff, we have managed to keep the girls training and supported at both trainings and games. We are hoping that we are back on the straight and narrow now.  Good luck to our awesome Mountie netball teams, Coach’s and Whānau for a successful season. https://www.facebook.com/mountainviewhighschoolnetball

Table Tennis: (School person in charge of Table Tennis is Mr Johnson) At the end of week one of Term 2 we finally got information on this year’s Table Tennis competition, so Mr Johnson has been busy doing sign-ups and getting organised to start competition on Wednesday 25th May 2022. If your student has missed the notices and would like to play Table Tennis, please get them to see me or Mr Johnson as soon as possible.

Archery: (School person in charge of Archery is Ms Firmin) Archery has had a couple of horrid days with the weather, but my thanks to Ms Firmin who has been awesome in her organisation of the students and James Coyle and the students are enjoying their Archery.

Smallbore Shooting: (School person in charge of Smallbore Shooting is Miss Allan) Miss Allan has an amazing number of keen students wishing to have a go at Smallbore Shooting this year. They are due to start this coming week, so good luck, and happy sorting out those targets to you all.

Summer Sports: Volleyball has now finished for the season, with our Senior Boys’ team paying off in the A Grade final against Roncalli.  Unfortunately Roncalli came out the winners this year, our boys should be absolutely stoked with their 2nd position finish. Especially as all but one had contracted Covid the week after returning from the Satellite tournament in Christchurch and only came out of isolation days before the big game.

Satellite Senior Volleyball Tournament in Christchurch:Our Senior Boys team returned from this tournament, having learned a lot and having played some great/hard volleyball.  Finishing 5th out of 8 teams in their section is something to be proud of considering the depth of talent the bigger schools in the South Island have. Congratulations players and Coach.

A reminder to all parents of students that played Volleyball in the 2021-2022 season that your fees should now be paid in total, if they are not, please do this as soon as possible. Many thanks!

Aoraki Swimming: We have one student heading away to the Aoraki Swimming competition this week. Good luck to Nikita Middleton (Year 9), who last week got new PB’s in 3 out of 4 of her races at her local Timaru Swim meet.

Aoraki Cross Country: This event was held on Tuesday 24th May.  See our photos and article to see how our students performed!

Bayfield School Sports Exchange: Coming up on Thursday 9th June, I am beginning to get this sorted now so information will be coming home to you via email/google forms, and then a notice will be given to your student with the expectations/information on it too. We will be heading down to Dunedin this year (as it’s our turn), but it is just down, play our games and home again in one day.

FEES: Winter sport fees have now been charged to your students’ school accounts, (except for Badminton and Table Tennis).  Could you please make sure you start to get these paid off.

Many thanks to you all for reading this, and keep warm everyone, winter is fast approaching.
