Year 11 Geography - Earthquake Field Trip to Christchurch

Trevor Barge —

On May 12, the Year 11 Geography classes travelled to Christchurch as part of their study of earthquakes in Canterbury

The first stop was Quake City, a multi-sensory attraction coordinated by the Canterbury Museum. Here students were given a guided tour of the museum, starting with Canterbury’s earthquake past, to the 2010-2011 earthquakes, through to the present day rebuilding of Christchurch. The museum houses many items acquired from buildings and other structures damaged during the earthquakes.

While one half of the group visited Quake City, the other half did a walking tour of the Christchurch CBD. The tour took in important sites such as the Christchurch Cathedral, the PGC site, the CTV site, and the Canterbury Earthquake National Memorial.

After lunch in the Margaret Mahy Playground, we travelled out to Redcliffs and Sumner to see the damage done to the cliffs before travelling home. It was a very good trip - thank you to all who helped.
