Canterbury Primary Schools Duathlon

Jeremy Griffiths —

Mike Pero Motorsport Park (more commonly known as Ruapuna Raceway) had a number of keen athletes descend on it, armed with their bikes and leg-power, as it played host to the CPS Duathlon last Monday 27 March.

There were 1084 participants from 88 schools, which is over 100 more than ever before. The weather didn’t exactly play its part, in fact it was quite simply miserable, which made the event even more challenging.

We had a small but enthusiastic team represent Mt Pleasant School. The team consisted of: Juliet F (Year 5), Fynn H (Year 5), Carter J (Year 5) and Blake C-D (Year 7). The 9 and 10 years race began with a 2km run, followed by a 6km bike and finished with a 1km run. The 11 and 12 years race began with a 2km run, followed by a 9km bike and finished with a 1km run. All of the four athletes competed hard and should be very proud of their achievements. A special mention to Juliet who placed 13th in her section.

The experience of competing in this event will serve these students well and perhaps we can increase the number of Mt Pleasant students in next year’s event.

A huge thank you to the dedicated parents who kindly gave up their time to help with the running of the event. Without you, we simply would not have been able to enter a team.

Blake - I was proud of what I did especially in the treacherous conditions it was held in. Everyone needed a lot of courage for the race because of how cold, wet and miserable it was. The learner profile traits and attitudes that I think were most showed throughout the race were … enthusiasm to finish the because no one wanted to race in the pouring rain. Commitment for not giving up even though you were freezing to death. Appreciation for your opponents and especially balanced for having a great run around in the rain. What I would like to do better next time is bring lots more of warm clothes. Thank you Juliet’s Mum for cheering me on throughout the race!

Carter - It was exciting and fun, especially because of the rain!

Fynn - It was challenging and enjoyable at the same time.
