Our Learning: How we organise ourselves

Anita Hayes —

Routines and Systems help us to organise ourselves.

This term Rooms 4 & 5 in Team Take Off have been learning through the transdisciplinary theme of 'How We Organise Ourselves'

An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function of organisations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

Using the central idea of 'Routines and Systems help us to organise ourselves', we used the concepts of function and responsibility. We have been exploring these lines of inquiry:

  • Being organised helps us and others through the day (Function)

  • We are responsible for ourselves and the things around us (Responsibility)

  • There are different systems that we can use to help us be responsible (Responsibility)

Rooms 4 and 5 started this inquiry by considering our routine in the mornings before we come to school. We continued by developing our morning routine AT school and working hard to have this routine completed each morning, learning that this was our individual responsibility.

We then looked beyond our classroom into other areas of the school where there might be routines and systems, and considered our personal responsibilities in contributing to these. We discovered that there are routines in the library and the school office, that Simon the caretaker has important daily routines and that there are routines associated with using the road patrol crossings, the school PE shed, our recycling and the barista team follows a routine to provide coffees to the staff.

We discovered that routines don’t always have to be exactly the same, but do need to follow a logical sequence and that this can be shown as a FLOW CHART with arrows to indicate the sequence.

We carried routine learning into maths. We learned about our daily routine in the classroom, days of the week and months of the year.
