Canterbury Kids Lit Quiz Competition

Maria Arneil —

Eight hardy and knowledgeable students from the Mt Pleasant School Lit Quiz Group spent a challenging morning at Cobham Intermediate on Wednesday the 14th March.

Their Purpose?  To participate in the first round of the Canterbury Kids Lit Quiz Competition. The 2 teams of 4 were just two of the 63 teams that were quizzed that day. Whilst letting the main prize slip from their fingers, our two groups achieved awesome midfield results.

Lit Quiz

The Lit Quiz teams whispered excitedly as the Quizmaster took his place in the front of the room. He started by introducing what we were going to do that day. He told us we were the second biggest heat in the world with 64 teams.
“Who told Katniss to ‘stay alive’ in the arena?”He starts.
His words are fast paced and hard to keep up with. Teams only just have enough time to tell their scribe the answer and then move on.
Lit quiz is a quiz competition based entirely around books. It is divided into 10 sections which each have 10 questions. You are allowed to choose to double the points on one of the sections. After each section is finished runners come round and collect the sheets. Once all the sheets are collected the quizmaster will then tell everybody the answers. Each section will have a winner and they will get a prize. For each question you get right you get one point. Your ranks in the end are based on these points. The first and second teams go through to the Semi final. This year it is in Wellington.

It was a pleasure to see our students conduct themselves in a competitive yet gracious manner. Their ability to later reflect robustly on their performance further highlights the great adults they are growing into. The Mt Pleasant School Lit Quiz group meet every Thursday lunchtime (in the Library - of course!!) all year round. It is open to any year 5, 6, 7 or 8 students who are passionate about the books they read and love talking about them. Well done to Phoebe H, Felix H, Louis V, Katherine B, Emma R, Eva D, Osher D and Anna B.

Also a great big thanks to Lisa Chubb for giving up her morning and helping with transport.
