Our Learning: Sounding out!

Team Magma —

🎧 Sound and movement connect us with feelings, identity and culture.

This term, Team Magma have been exploring sound and movement through the transdisciplinary theme of ‘How We Express Ourselves’

How We Express Ourselves:

An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Using the central idea of ‘Sound and movement connect us with feelings,’ identity and culture. We have been exploring these lines of inquiry:

  • Sound and movement take many forms and can create many effects. (Form)
  • Many aspects of culture and identity can be expressed and communicated through sound and movement. (Connection)
  • People interpret sound and movement to mean different things. (Perspective)

The approaches to learning we developed were:

  • Communication (listening & non-verbal communication)
  • Self Management (gross & fine motor skills and spatial awareness)

This was an exciting unit of inquiry, and was a favourite amongst our students. There were a lot of fun, hands-on activities as we investigated sound and the different ways of making music. Students had the opportunity to hear different types of music, play lots of different instruments and learn about soundscapes and body percussion.

We were able to draw upon the expertise of Amalia Drain, our violin teacher, who shared her vast knowledge about the history of music and instruments from different cultures. All classes had fun linking the unit of inquiry to their writing, with a focus on onomatopoeia (noise words).

Some reflections on our soundscape:

When I made my soundscape I worked with Ella J and Naomi. We made a soundscape about a day at the zoo. I think we could look up more and have less action. Next time I will choose different people to work with because me and Ella didn’t want to do the same thing.

When I made my soundscape I worked with Jayden. We made a soundscape about a spaceship landing on the moon. There were aliens zapping their weapons at them. I think we worked very well together. Next time we could make it more longer.

When I made my soundscape I worked with Holly, Jessie and Ayla Grace. We made a soundscape about cats. I think we did good actions. We used time well. We listened to each other and we used levels. Next time I think I could have chosen different people and talk to each other and looked up more.
