Exploring the concept of Kaitiakitanga
In our most recent TRS inquiry, we explored the Central Idea that ‘people’s choices affect the environment and living things.’
As we explored the various ways we affect the environment around us, we grew an appreciation for the concept of kaitiakitanga; of guardianship and protection. We set out to create a more sustainable future for our world, and each chose a different area that we could have a positive impact on.
After discussing some of the areas most in need of intervention, we began to form groups to take action. These groups explored topics including: sustainable farming, controlling pests that are threatening native species of New Zealand, waterway management, invasive species, and helping to plant new trees. Every group decided to take action in a different way. While some sought to take action directly, others decided to learn more about their area and help to educate others.
The inquiry provoked many questions regarding the state of our natural world today, and we were able to gain a better understanding on how we can shape it for the better through our actions. It was wonderful to see us demonstrating what it means to be a principled and caring citizen, creating a better future for ourselves through better use of our values today.
