BYOD Strategy 101

Chris Nord —

In October, we held an evening for parents to discuss our strategy around devices at school, and students bringing their own devices to school. As part of this, we shared the advantages of students having their own device and how this is managed both within the school environment, and at home.

We see devices such as laptops and tablets as learning tools that have their place alongside all the other tools students use in their learning. As a school, we are acutely aware of the challenges around how to achieve balance across the programme... how much time is spent on devices and what other alternatives achieve the same result (the pen can be mightier than the keyboard).

Currently, we provide all devices for students in Years 1-4 where their use is predominately integrated with their core learning areas. However, from Year 5, the need to have access to a device for themselves becomes more important. This is why we ask parents to support this strategy by having students have access to a device they have brought from home. We have been approached by parents asking our advice regarding which device to purchase. Here is some advice that may help you:

  • Most technology retailers (both stores and online) have specific areas where they have devices recommended for school use (they also offer special prices including package deals). This also depends on the age of the student. We do not have restrictions around the type of device. All we expect is it is WiFi capable, has a keyboard (and preferably a mouse) and comes in a protective case. The entry point for devices starts at $300.
  • If you are able to, don't make it a Christmas present. This means you have more control over the device use.
  • Do your homework. Talk to other parents, friends, neighbours - and do plenty of online research before purchasing a product.
  • Once you purchase a device, a big part of the management of this is how to become a responsible digital citizen. Monitoring and setting boundaries around use are strategies all parents should discuss as part of the responsibility of having a device.
  • We do have a do have a BYOD information website HERE. We are currently updating this information, however it may answer any questions you may have.

If you wish to discuss this further, please feel free to call the office and book a time to see me.
