Huxster Mountain Bike School Relay – McLeans Forest – 4th April 2018

Julia Metcalfe —

On a warm, windy Wednesday this week a group of Yr5-8 students competed in the annual Huxster mountain bike relay at Macleans Island. The year 5/6 students rode in teams of two non-stop for 1.5hrs and the yr7/8 students rode for 3hrs non-stop, also in teams of two. It was a fun day and all students competed with enthusiasm and commitment.

What a stunning day Wednesday turned out to be for the annual Huxster Mountain Bike School Relay. A large number of schools turned up to take part out at McLeans Forest and Mt Pleasant School had a great turn out of four teams for the Yr 5/6 race which was 4km laps over 1hr 30mins. Teams were Juliet F and Holly S, George M and Luke C, Fynn H and Carter J, Vinnie H and Isaac T. All teams managed 6 laps which was an awesome effort. Two teams entered for the Yr 7/8 race of 5.5km over 3hrs were Lewis V and Felix H, Eve D and Phoebe H. Another awesome effort with the boys completing 10 laps and the girls 9 laps.

This was first time for all of the Y 5/6 teams hence a few nerves and slight feeling of being out of their comfort zones for some but once the race was under way and they had done a lap each they were all completely loving it! There was a great team spirit with Mt Pleasant teams cheering each other on and also cheering friends they spotted from others schools competing.

There were some amazing individual times recorded and all teams can be extremely proud of the positive attitudes and perseverance they showed on the day, especially once the good old nor west wind started blowing!

Thanks so much to the support crew – Del, Ange, Lisa, Karen, Matt, Grant and Paul. Pressure was certainly on towards the last laps to get the transponders switched to the other rider as fast as possible with every second counting! Also massive thanks to Christina for being an awesome school marshal which involved her riding alongside the riders encouraging them with her great wealth of wisdom!
