Canterbury Primary Schools Athletics

Ground Control —

A team of 12 athletes representing not only Mt Pleasant School but also the SE Zone, headed across town to Ngā Puna Wai on Wednesday 30 November to compete in the Canterbury Primary Schools Athletics.

There were over 2000 athletes from 180 schools present at the event, which made for plenty of fierce competition. In fact, it was frequently referred by the announcer as the biggest one-day primary schools athletics event in New Zealand. I was extremely pleased with the way in which our athletes responded to the challenge and they should all be very proud of their achievements. Even qualifying for the event was a huge achievement!

There were several stand-out performances, however, it was hard to look past Johnny S. (Yr 6 Boys) and his exploits in both the Long Jump (5th – 4.18m) and High Jump (=6th - 1.20m). Also, Joey C (Yr 7 Boys) achieved a fine result in the 60m sprint, narrowly missing out on a spot in the final (12th).

A huge thank you to all of the supportive parents who kindly transported the students and provided plenty of encouragement throughout the day.
