HOT OFF THE PRESS!

Debates underway RIGHT NOW!

At Sumner School hall this morning, 18 students from Linwood College, Sumner School, Heathcote Valley, Star of the Sea and Mt Pleasant showcased their debating skills acquired over the past 7 weeks through an enrichment programme hosted by Linwood College.

Aleksandra's team mooted that 'Reality TV shows cause more harm than good.'

Ethan's team was opposed to the premise that 'Boxing should be banned.'

Sailor and Zach's teams debated against each other, with their premise being that cloning should be illegal. Both teams presented strong arguments. The Affirmative team emphasised the negative side effects of using genetically modified cells, talked about how this would lead to a lack of diversity among humankind and the impact on the global population if cloning as used to keep people alive longer. The Negative side highlighted the benefits of cloning could help with healing injuries and illnesses (for example, producing organs for transplant), the trustworthiness of the science community who are committed to working for good outcomes and the potential for safe and ethical developments.

The adjudicator, an ex-Linwood College debater herself, gave a strong summary of each argument and awarded the following wins:

Reality TV causing more harm than good went to the Affirmative team.

Boxing should be banned went to the Negative team.

The genetic cloning should be illegal went to the negative team.

Congratulations to the students who all spoke confidently and with conviction. They were very convincing and have a promising future in debating!
