James Murphy —

Being a parent of a new child to the school is a big milestone. You want the very best for your children, for them to be happy so that they can reach their potential. From what I have seen so far, Mt Pleasant School is simply brilliant. Mt Pleasant School has some big and exciting challenges ahead in the next few years which will involve a lot of change. A trustee for the School needs foresight, open communication and a passion to help navigate the School through the challenges it will face. I believe that I have these characteristics and the skill set to deliver great outcomes for the School, which in turn will benefit our students, parents and teachers for years to come.

A bit about me.

I was brought up in this beautiful area. I attended Canterbury University where I studied law and science, and was lucky to meet my wife Nicole. We moved away from Christchurch to start our legal careers, but came back five years ago for the opportunities in Christchurch post-earthquakes and to start a family. We have two boys, Gabe who is in Basecamp, and Harvey who is one.

What would I bring to the role of trustee?

‹I have been a lawyer for 11 years and in the last 5 years I have specialised in property and construction law, advising on a wide range of property and construction matters in Christchurch. I also have extensive experience in trust law and the role of a trustee. Being a lawyer is not only about providing sound legal advice, but also being an effective communicator and leader.

Outside of work I am the current president of the Rotary Club of Christchurch New Horizons and the chair of the New Horizons Rotary Club of Christchurch Charitable Trust. These roles are due to finish for me at the end of June and I would love the opportunity to combine my legal background as well as the leadership and trustee skills I have developed through Rotary, and put this energy into Mt Pleasant School.

I am invested in our community and I believe I will bring a unique skill set to the board in terms of helping the School in delivering on its master plan. I believe that having a lawyer on the board that understands and can advise on property and construction issues would be a real asset to the School.

Thank you.
