Floating and Sinking in Room 3

Nina Ferguson —

How the world works       Central idea: Objects behave differently when they are put in liquid, and that helps us know how to use them.

Over the past 6 weeks, Room 3 have been busy being scientists and experimenting with how objects behave in water. At the beginning of the Inquiry we thought all heavy objects sank and light objects floated. We wondered why then large cruise ships and container ships could float.

We learnt to hypothesize, experiment, observe, record and analyze our results just like a scientist. Through our experiments we realized objects can float or sink depending on their density, shape, how much water is displaced and absorption of materials.

We used all this new knowledge to build our own boats and to test them in the school pool.
