Our Learning: How we Express Ourselves

Team Rock Solid —

The Arts are used to express ideas and feelings to an audience.

This term Team Rock Solid have been learning through the transdisciplinary theme of 'How we express ourselves'

An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Using the central idea of The Arts are used to express ideas and feelings to an audience, we used the concepts of form, function and perspective. We have been exploring these lines of inquiry:

The Arts are used to express ideas and feelings to an audience.

  • The Arts enable a range of techniques and creative elements. (Form)

  • The Arts can be used to deliver messages. (Function)

  • People interpret ideas and characters in different ways. (Perspective)

Term 3 has seen a hive of activity in Team Rock Solid. Students have spent considerable time writing scripts and creating digital platforms to spread a message of Kaitiakitanga.

The creativity and innovation has been amazing. As a result the final products have consisted of plays, music, songs, movies and slideshows. Students considered the Kaitiakitanga theme - being guardians of the land. This has been a consistent theme continued on from previous units of inquiry this year in our team.

Key Approaches to Learning focus areas for students during their inquiry was around the development of personal skills such as communication and social skills, with an emphasis on self management - meeting deadlines. These became paramount with the interruption of our Covid 19 lockdown.

Students examined and reflected on their own and others final work through the conceptual lenses of Perspective and Function. They demonstrated their understanding of how The Arts reflect different points of view and that it can have a purpose or role.

Communication skills Viewing: I can look at things carefully to learn as much as I can

Presenting: I can demonstrate a variety of methods to present my work and engage an audience.

Listening: I can listen to directions and to others.

Social Skills Accepting responsibility: I can take on a job and finish it.

Group decision making: I can work well with others in my group to make decisions

Self management Time management: I can use my time well.

Key Concepts:

  • Form - What is it like?  Everything has a form with recognizable features that can be observed, identified, described and categorized.
  • Function - How does it work?  Everything has a purpose, a role or a way of behaving that can be investigated.
  • Perspective - What are the points of view?   Knowledge is moderated by perspectives. Different perspectives lead to different interpretations, understandings and findings. Perspectives may be individual, group, cultural or disciplinary.
