Te Iwa o Matariki - The Nine Stars of Matariki
During Week 7 10-14th June, we will be celebrating Te Iwa o Matariki as a whole school. Matariki is the Māori name for a cluster of stars which reappear at dawn to signal the Māori New Year.
It is a time to be with whānau, remember those who have passed and make plans for the future. It was celebrated with kai, waiata and games. This year we are focusing on new research by leading Māori astronomer, Dr Rangi Matamua that there is actually nine stars that make up the Matariki cluster. Each star has a name, purpose and link to the environment.
Kapa Haka will perform some waiata on Tuesday 11th from 8:30-9:00am in the courtyard to begin our celebrations. Weather permitting. All Kapa Haka students need to be at school by 8:25 on this morning.
On Friday 14th June, buddy classes will come together for shared kai. A notice should have been emailed home about what students need to bring. We also welcome Kathy from the Mt Pleasant Community Centre who will work with some classes to make Matariki lanterns.
Ngā mihi mō te tau hou Māori - Happy Māori New Year!
