Our Learning: How We Organise Ourselves

Team Rock Solid —

Entrepreneurs have a responsibility to develop, market and sell sustainable products and services using sustainable methods.

Team Rock Solid have been learning through the transdisciplinary theme of 'How We Organise Ourselves'

An inquiry into the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the structure and function or organisations; societal decision-making; economic activities and their impact on humankind and the environment.

Using the central idea of ‘Entrepreneurs have a responsibility to develop, market and sell sustainable products and services using sustainable methods’ we have been exploring the following lines of inquiry:

We have been exploring these lines of inquiry:

  • Giving back can have a positive impact on our wellbeing, as well as our community (Connection)

  • Our environment is impacted by the products we create (Causation)

  • Consumer choice continues to create significant issues for our environment/sustainability (Responsibility)

Students researched and explored the sustainability of many of the consumer products available today. With this in mind, they then collaborated together on their ideas around what they could create, market and sell as part of a campaign to raise money for a local charity.

The criteria that challenged the students' thinking the most was that their products needed to meet the brief of being sustainable. In other words, how could they create an ethical product that used/was sustainable and that would entice the consumer?

This inquiry also provided opportunities for students to further develop their Approaches to Learning skills. They needed to be researchers, communicators and time managers. They were required to work collaboratively, sharing responsibilities to plan and create their product here at school within an agreed timeframe. They managed their advertising, cost of production and handled money.

Using our amazing space in Paparahi, students set up their market day stalls. They created beautiful eye-catching stall displays to encourage their customers to visit and buy. Many students had mixed emotions about how they felt on the day.

Crowds thronged in and the buzz of a marketplace filled the space.

We were thrilled to raise over $900 for our choice of charity.
